Responses (September 1 and 2)”
Thanks to all who made my first Burning Man an unbelievable experience; all the artists (especially you drummers), all the people who said good morning when I arrived and wished me a safe trip when I left, everyone who honked and flashed peace signs when they saw the big Burning Man sign in our caravan, everyone who danced a jig to get a free toy at our camp, James - for his surprise gift after the burn, the stranger who embraced me and told me he loved me at the burn, Jon for saving our dead transmission in Newman on the way up, all my friends in my camp (and the new ones I made) and especially to Clate and Elmo for making this trip possible. May the God(s) you worship always smile upon you. Hope to see you all again next year! - Tabitha -- L. Tabitha Wenger, September 2, 1997 at 11:55p
well, number 3 and a half for me and the best so far; truly great vibe, truly great organization, and truly great people. an observation why this bm was so good and why the next bm's will be great: my first year was '94 and there was 1800 people; a year later, the year Larry called the 'burn of the dark spirit' was 5000, thus there was over 50% new people. a year later there were 10,000 souls and again 50% new people. this year there were less than 15,000 people which means that about two thirds of the crowd had been there before. it ain't the size baby, it how fast it's changing: so for our disneyland for delinquints, our club med for freaks as we grow and participate (and help others do the same) we bring to it our colletive experience and joy. peace and respect to spiral oasis, the home I return to every year. -- vordo, September 2, 1997 at 11:26p
FIRST of all thanks to the organizers and participants, this was the best one yet. I liked not having cars buzzing around all the time. I even came to like the site which I didn't when I came to visit three weeks ago. I didn't get out to the springs, but helped ?? (what is his name) work on the underwater dock to Water Woman. Did that idea get realized? I hope so. SECOND. I don't think that I had a bad interaction with anyone there. Everyone was in such a wonderful mood. Something I believe the compactness of the site contributed. We couldn't camp 50 feet away from each other, we were more intimate, rose to the challenge and got along. It renewed my faith in people to be good, generous and interested in each other, while being as wacky as possible. THIRD and most important, this was my third time and each time I have come away thinking that this important spiritually for me, but not being sure how. This time, Jeff, my boyfriend and I, dressed in our evening lingere, were strolling away from the big burn when we ran into two cops.I went up to them and candidly and good naturedly asked them "So what do you think about all of this." The big blond nazi boy said in a very nasty reply, "It makes me want to go to church." I replied "just to pray that pagan filth away right?" He said flatly, "yes." Later I thought of a comeback... "Well buddy this is our church, this is our respite from suffering through 358 days of christian-inspired, bore-me-to-death society with all its mind numbing institutions, corporations and television. This is where we pray, this is our sacred place." Next year I intend to honor this sentiment more and participate more. Love to all, Mark -- Mark Duran, September 2, 1997 at 11:15p
Thanks to all who made it happen! The surging mass at the burn was the most incredible thing I've ever seen..! I'll be back next year to volunteer. HEY SAN DIEGANS...How about an after burn party in SD! maybe make some plans for next year? Thanks Jason for the ride, and to Paul, Kimber, Shelly, Dave and Company for the hospitality at the Martian Embassy...A cleansing experience! Hope to see you all again soon. ----NEIL -- Neil, September 2, 1997 at 11:13p
Having participated since the beach daze - it was interesting/intriguing/revolting to read about the man..... I made up my mind last year to never return to what once was precious and obscure to that which has become commercial and cliche... -- Justin Umber, September 2, 1997 at 10:57p
A special Thank You to the folks at the Livingroom where we watched Burning Man on Sunday night. What a view! Thanks for having us over. You people are wonderful..... And a special Thank You to the Red-headed Virgin and her Media Ripping Bodyguard for a stupendous sideshow. If you were there, you KNOW. If you weren't, then go next year because I can't begin to explain it... A couple of suggestions::: The exiting traffic would be better if you Rangers didn't try to control the flow. Just make sure we stay slow and on the roads. We'll get out of there on our own just fine. Kinda like on the Bay Bridge..... Also, if BM needs $, why didn't we get hit up at the gate? We volunteered cash, which was graciously accepted. I hope there is enough to put on next year. I probably spent $300 total for the weekend and $75 %-wise is a small price to pay for the most incredible cultural event I have ever experienced. And I've seen a few things around this world..... Love it, love it, love it, love it! See you next year. Let us know what we can do for Burning Man. Tom in Sonoma. -- Tom Warton, September 2, 1997 at 10:51p
THANK YOU organizers of this event (who are reportedly going into debt every year to make this happen), THANK YOU volunteers who did all the logistical work (especially for the Cafe and its cool shade), THANK YOU creative people who made me laugh and think every time I turned around, THANK YOU DJ's for the theme music (especially Tom and the Goa Trance; p.s.: Chuck, sorry I freaked out on you a little bit with my visions; I bought the Platipus Compilation today), and super-duper-extra-special thanks to everyone at Camp Cul-de-Sac who encouraged me to stay when my ride wanted to leave early, gave me a tarp to sleep on, and threw blankets over me while I slept: Ron, Ted, Doug, John, Deborah, Johnathan, Chris, Andreas, Michael, Paul, Kevin, Charlotte, Alan, etc., and especially Stephanie who gave me a ride to the Reno airport. The block party lives in each of you. The contact information is on its way. And to the girl I approached at the main stage Sunday night (with the glow sticks in your hair), sorry you misunderstood what I said. I still feel stupid. Anyway, I have some video, including the first fashion show but excluding the actual burn. I'm dubbing 6 hours of Hi-8 down to VHS so e-mail me if you're interested in obtaining a copy to show at your next bible study class. Also, if there are any people from Dallas or Austin (???) I'm thinking about having a post-Burning Man gathering to maybe plan for next year (collaboration optional) but mostly to hang out and watch the video. Again, e-mail me for more info on that. THANK YOU ALL OF YOU. I've found my tribe. -- Hugh Seagraves, September 2, 1997 at 10:32p
Peace and love to everyone who made my first BURN so special -- joseph, September 2, 1997 at 10:06p
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!! I had an unbelievable time. The final night was complete sensory overload. At first sight, the playa appearred out of control, but with a little reflection I realized that it was controlled chaos. Only things that were meant to be burned were infact burned. I cannot show enough appreciation to all of those involved. I would like to begin preparing for next year's celebration. Also it would be preferred if the few vendors that used currency would either convert to the barter system or not show next year. It would be nice to have one weekend per year with the least amount of capitalistic influence. -- Cree, September 2, 1997 at 10:00p
A crowded land, previously barren, turned into a land of beauty and intensified emotion. Everyone was caring, kind, and imaginative. Even the dust, dirt, and sun seemed to approve of the happenings of everyone and every seperate and connected playful games. I have been once, to this fesitval of anarchic imagination, but I will return, every year, for this week of awesome excursions. Thank you, all of you, who participated, worried, fretted, worked, played, and loved for this experience. This was beauty, and playful minds, freely sharing in a perfect communism, like a Native American tribe. There was gods, demons, chiefs, and warriors. Imagine Summer Camp, full of some types of delinquints. Imagine the counselers have all died, or left, or maybe turned into the kids, and you find out that all of the people there aren't really delinquints, but very nice people. It was gentle anarchy, and something my mind, body and soul, find holy for the rest of my life. ----The Phiz -- Skot Gale, September 2, 1997 at 9:58p
TO ALL THOSE WONDERFUL DRUMMERS...MUSCIANS..PERFORMERS....INFACT THE WHOLE DAMN TRIBE..THAT INCLUDES YOU! This was the first burn that i have been to and at last i feel that i have had the chance to be part of something that really made sense to me...the words fail the experience..i have it in my bones...i dont kow who the drummers and muscians were on Sunday night who played around the burning man fire until the early hours of the morning..but i was given the most incredible experience by you all...together we danced...the seperation between your beating drums and wailing clarinets freed my body to orgasmic delight in movement...i danced myself into a new exsistence..i ground myself into the sweet desert earth and set free to a blazing fire. I have lived until now waiting for this experience to dance for my life and all our lives... your drums and percussion kept safe the space of this most amazing ritual....i am warm inside and will carry the light of the burning fire and burning hearts with me always and most definately return next year to dance myself back into my real exsistence. I would love to see some photos of the sunday night if anyone can tell me where to look on the web for some...Love Light and delicoius laughter to all of you out there....layney******* -- Layney, September 2, 1997 at 9:42p

We begain our B.M. adventure on Saturday by melting Barbie w/ a mirror and exited Monday whilst a remote control coffee table scrambled amoungst traffic. Other that that we'll have to get back to you once all the pieces have beem assebled, but first were going to visit our local brain surgen for a cerebral loofah. -- Bridget & Grasshopper: The Disheveled Duo, September 2, 1997 at 9:32p
What an incredible event. I really enjoyed the diversity of the event! I'm planning on going next year, only I'll go on Friday instead of Saturday inorder to see more of the camps and have more of an opportunity to talk with other participants! -- Tom "Mario" Durante, September 2, 1997 at 9:27p
to the burning angel and the hollow ones, to the laughers and the screames and the ones who walk alone, we are all one tribe. I walked alone for twenty years, I have screamed since I was born. this world had almost killed me, before I found my home. We are all one tribe. Thank you Mr Harvey, you are a father to us all and I have a message to you from us all, DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN! Until we burn again; Nomaste my brothers and sisters, Nomaste. BAMBOO FAMILY FOREVER!!! -- Anon., September 2, 1997 at 9:21p
O joyous, o mysterious, o silly and sublime. Many thanks to the proprietor of the lovely pleasure pavilion. Perhaps someone inspired for next year (perhaps myself even!): Mattresses and sofas judiously placed about the playa would be a great public service. For stargazing, and sleeping, and coupling in the dark without getting playa dust in one's private parts. Blessings to all, remember we can carry the spirit of divine madness with us everywhere... -- Betsy, September 2, 1997 at 9:19p
It was hot. It was dusty. It was dirty. There is no place on earth I would rather be. Thank you to Ian, Shannon, Tori, and Megan. You have burned your way into my heart. As for the rest of my Bamboo Family, glow on always. P.S. Larry Harvey you are our silver lining. -- peg, September 2, 1997 at 9:15p
to the burning angels and the hollow ones, to the dreamers and the screamers and the ones who walk alone: Nomaste. In the dust and the fire, in the screams of our desire, and the cacophony of our joyous rejection of their repression, I am alive. I am alive again for these few spare days, a handful of hours that justify the mundanity forced down our throats 24/7/363. In the dust I found my family, In the dust I found my clan, In the dust I found hope for us all. Until we burn again, I will hold my screams inside, I will keep the ashes burning until again i join my tribe. Nomaste, my brothers and sisters, Nomaste, my tribe, Nomaste, my lovers, Keep the fire alive. We have burned, we will burn, we burn alone until we join again. we are the children of the sun and the flame! NOMASTE! P.S. :nomaste=my spirit honors and respects yours. P.P.S :Mr. Harvey, you have been a mentor, a father figure, a guardian spirit and a guiding light to us all for years we love and respect you, each and every one of us, and we have all heard of the struggle you fight every year to keep the Man alive, and in one voice we all have one thing to say: DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN!!! NOMASTE! P.P.P.S.: until next year, BAMBOO FAMILY FOREVER!!! -- Kaosangel, September 2, 1997 at 9:06p
What an incredible, life-changing experience. That is how things should always be. Jay thanks for the awesome peace pipe. Chia, the Burning Man experience wouldn't have been the same if I didn't have you to share it with, the sunset, the stars, the tent! What an incredible birthday gift. We'll be back next year! -- karen, September 2, 1997 at 9:03p

The community lives on and on! Driving back along I-80 and desperately wanting to be back at Black Rock--we passed a bus with a burning man emblem drawn in dust on the side... and started a Post-burn water fight along the highway! -- Ian, September 2, 1997 at 8:27p
Groove Birds, THANKS A LOT! Thanks for the laughs, the smiles, the jokes, the party. Thanks for BIG WARM FUZZY HUGS, the dances, the most excellent meals. Thanks for the companionship, the camaraderie, the friendship, the love. Thanks for the red eyes, the dirt and the grime, the MUD (you posers)!!! Thanks for the fog the days hereafter, the un-reality, the community. But most of all...thanks for the Burninig Man experience. Here's to next year and the coolest people in the world! Love, Kurt -- Kurt V. Scholtens, September 2, 1997 at 8:27p
Simply incredible. The ice sculpture sundial...the spiral birth tunnel...the Ishtar opera. (!) The firemen we met at the hot springs we very cool, excellent open attitude. Definitely going to return next year, and every year. Special thanks to the glow camp folks for making the trip so friendly and warm. You are the best! One thought about the media: Instead of shunning them, perhaps they should be welcomed -- and indoctrinated -- before being set loose. It might help them Get it, and cut down on the negativity that results otherwise. Ya know? -- Jason, September 2, 1997 at 8:27p
for the second year now, I woke up this morning clean and in a bed and cried to be dirty and hot once more. I was not happy to be home, for my home is in Black Rock City, and I have to wait for another year to go home. However, again it was life changing and the most spritual experience I've ever had. Thank you Larry Harvey for sharing your vision with the rest of us...my spirit honors yours eternally. Also, thank you to all of the volunteers that make it possible I will be one of you next year. Thanks again I cant wait to come home. -- shannon, September 2, 1997 at 8:19p
Monday night I had a most incredible encounter with what I would describe as the remnant spirits of my BMan experience. My soul rejected a return to normality. Misty's tears of departure from BMan spoke my heart. I have so many new sisters and brothers and I hope to see you all again. The fools somehow lost their three person bike to the playa. Oh well. We all returned with more. Thanks Marian, for all the great words. Thanks, Jeremy, Todd, Aaron for helping me light the fools. Thanks Madame at the Temple of Atonement for the peck piercing. Thanks to all the fools for a great camp and the way of the sensual whipping. I'm sure we could all use a lesson from Madame. Thanks for the living room ride. Thanks to all the organizers and stimulizers. -- A Cloned Fool, September 2, 1997 at 8:17p
The power of our crowd during the burn was tangible...perhaps a glimpse of what our ancestors felt at a gathering of the tribes, or what today's faithful experience in Mecca or Rome, only without all that burdensome dogma. -- George Post, September 2, 1997 at 8:08p

my first burning man...I had no idea how incredible it would be. Standing amid the flames and choas i felt like we are to become architects of a new hoilday.I can imagine a day in the near future when September first will no longer be labor day, but burning man. -- Toby, September 2, 1997 at 7:56p
BURN THE MAN!!!! 1997 burning man rocked. see ya next year -- mikiala, September 2, 1997 at 7:56p
We love you, Burning Man! This was our first year and you can be sure that we will be back again and again. It's like they say about Disneyland - one trip will never do. We got home after a 10 hour drive and woke up the next day (today) depressed and unready to go back to the "real" world. Can't wait 'til next year. Took tons of pictures (will try to send them if we can find out how!). We want to be on the mailing list! Until we hear from the "Man" again, love and heartfelt wishes. Travis and Ana Silvrlynx@AOL.COM -- Travis Herring & Ana Brady, September 2, 1997 at 7:54p
BM was the best vacation i've ever had and i can't wait till next year. I'd also like to say hi to Trouble you crazy grrrrl. -- eric, September 2, 1997 at 7:52p
we arrived just the two of us. But before the weekend was over we were part of a wonderful community, and had an experiecne that will last for years. As the days passed and inhibitions fell away we dropped all the city learned behaviors and just had fun. Everyone excepting everyone, no judgements. Life was good, dusty but good. The stars, the burn, the humus, wasabe peas, and jerky all of it was perfect. I played, I danced, I burnt, and i can't wait to do it again next year!! -- Kat, September 2, 1997 at 7:51p
I had a great, great time! There's nothing like the old, remote playa, but for all of my initial negative reactions to this year's site (too close to the road, too much grass, not a circle, etc.), it really worked! And that is very much a testament to the wonderful energy that we the people created, the sense of community that should be independent of location (perhaps we can carry a bit of that back to San Francisco etc. with us). The toilets were a minor annoyance as were the dust and the helicopter. I thought the percentage of creative people was higher this year than last year for certain, and maybe even higher than that in '95. I absolutely loved the auto-free playa; it was very liberating to be able to cycle or walk or just hang out without worrying about being plowed down by a massive 4x4. I didn't object to the press' presence so much as to their great numbers and sometimes clueless insensitivity to the whole mood in Black Rock City, which caused them to compromise people's experiences and may result in distorted stories about the event. Though the press were at times annoying, I fucking adapted in the words of Adrian the Sage. Camera people were always polite with me and I never felt violated. And I even saw some of the spectators loosen up over time, getting the hang of it, the seeds of Burning Man civility taking root in them, their beefy hands relaxing to let fall that can of Coors. (Speaking of letting cans fall, if you littered the playa and you are reading this, shame shame on you, you irresponsible knucklehead!) The Ishtar performance was most definitely THE SHIT! I would LOVE to be a Son of Ishtar! How about a repeat performance next year with a cast of 10,000? Thanks to Sunsirresponsible knucklehead!) The Ishtar performance was most definitely THE SHIT! I would LOVE to be a Son of Ishtar! How about a repeat performance next year with a cast of 10,000? Thanks to Sunscreen Camp for the excellent and utilitarian physical contact! Thanks to Bianca's Smut Shack for the calm, rejuvenating shade and people-watching. Thanks to Spencer Tunick for setting the stage for me to do jumping jacks with 200 other naked people just after sunrise. Thanks to Java Cow (we looove you, Java Cow!) for the jump start Sunday morning! Thanks to all the volunteers and the staff and the law enforcement and the firefighters for all of your contributions. And of course, thanks to all you nutty, creative extroverts that put a constant smile on my face! I feel a great calm and I am still grooving on the whole positive sense of freedom that prevailed in our city, and on the many surreal and beautiful experiences I had with the art, the people, and the playa. I'm sending my donation check ASAP. -- Bill, September 2, 1997 at 7:49p
Burning Man Chronicle Day 2 THE HORROR! THE HORROR! Port-a-lets plastered with Poo! Mystery aricraft airdrop streamers, crop dusters dust. Breasts and guy's units in copious evidence. Shade more valuable than Gold. I think that this many humans have never been here before and perhaps will never again . My feet and sox are caked in playa dust, a kind of talcum clay. You don't want to know about my underwear. I have developed a fondness for iced Chai made with soy. When you see the Burning Man city from the desert it is a long semi-circle. Banners flap like in a Japanese historical film epic. There are Jolly Rogers, Old Glory, Tibetan Prayer Flags, various national standards and corporate logos as well as streaming colored wind socks that reach 40 feet into the sky. This city has several newspapers, multiple FM radio stations, a police force, a fire department and well organized roads. Strangely there are no food stands or stores to buy things! There is an anti-capitalistic furvor that says people shouldn't engage in buying things. Shreesh and I agree that its weird that we should give our money to large corporations outside the camp for supplies. I would have rather purchased home-made ethnic food and stange creative culinary works of art. Everywhere there are drums. The natives are quite literally restless. The sound of drums will not leave us until we pull away to go home. Safari style life - Shreesh and Neena discuss the African Velt over chilled white wine under our Indian Awning of Elephant patchwork. ELVIS! A man drops by our camp to refute a drunken argument Shreesh and I are having. Something to do with Scientific Axioms being based on faith, therefore science is a religion. I've found this weird book that purports to prove with mathematics that God exists! Seems this guy has a different take on it. We ply him with beer and argue furiously. Thats when Elvis stops by. Shreesh asks Elvis which Elvis stamp he prefers. He says he is used to having his behind licked and likes either. Somehow this is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time and we yell to each other in loud obnoxious voices "Its the KING!" Elvis is pleased and wanders off. We start to laugh about Austrialian gutter slang. When you go to the bathroom thats when you "unbutton the mutton". A penis is the "beef bayonet". We can't stop laughing. The sunset is amazing, I recall the way the Greeks would start some stanzas with "The Rosy Fingers of Dawn . . ." Upon the dusk the burning man becomes blue neon on the horizon - far away - visible from everywhere, naked on the empty play lakebed of cracked dry mud. There is a boulevard, a type of Champs-a-lysee of torches that lead to Burning Man - silent - he projects: "I AM YOUR GOD" But too hip to bother answering prayers. BLUE GIRL In the night we go to the stage - "Blue Girl" performs. I think I need the Cliff Notes to figure the message out. Shreesh and I like it. There are gouts of flame, a beheading and naked women! The wives hate it. Blue Girl is Butt Naked and painted blue. She plays the violin, badly. The passion play sends Neena into a rage - to her it is an un-scientific regression into ignorence. Ada's critique is less specific "they have no talent". Blue Girl's message seems to revolve around be-heading sexual/reproductive male tyranny, and re-birth. The fire was cool! There is no escaping Blue Girl without being touched and challenged. ATOMIC EXPLOSIONS Large gasoline bombs boom out in the inky blackness. An immense atomic bomb-like ball of fire rises into the sky. Ominous choppers with no lights circle the encampment. We stop to see some Bondage act where volunteers have their genitals bound and their naked buns whipped. Shreesh and I agree that we would pay good money to see a fundamentalist neo-Christian pastor we know at Burning Man. Burning Man is the antithesis of this pastor's message. The black hole of sin. Most certainly he would be apoplectic and probably expire from an anurism. An intense looking man in a tuxedo, the artist, torches a massive self portrait. The painting is in panels - the visage is tortured looking, blue, Van Goughesque, cock-eyed. The flames lick at the portrait - thousands of hours of labor vaporize in violence. The crowd appears not to connect with the re-birth symbolism of destruction of a lovingly constructed self. We stagger back to camp exhausted, mostly from walking a lot. Everyone lapses into a coma. I awaken very late to bitter cold. The sky is blacker than I can remember. There are stars, O my God there are stars! I can see the edge of my galaxy. I suddenly feel like I'm glued to the side of the big ball of the Earth. The drums haven't stopped. It is now somehow day again. At dawn we go on patrol for "Java Cow". We don't really know who the fuck Java Cow is, but we are lead to believe that he is a man/cow who emerges from the desert with latte libations. To our intense dissappointment we cannot find Java Cow. He has been swallowed up by the vast Mad Max tent raggedy city. Large steel sculptures rest on the desert. Bony, beeseeching the wide sky they are all iron and pathos. Incredibly there is large ice sphere in the sweltering sun. Broken clocks smile drunkenly from just beneath the surface. The dripping has created a hog wallow of modeling clay mud. In the brutal white heat, we hunker like vermin waiting for the planet to move around into the coolness of a firey sunset. THE BRIDE WORE HER NIGHTY We stumble across a woman about to get married at the Burning Man pedistal. She is adorned in only a transparent white nighty and G string. "Where's the Groom" we wonder outloud? "Somewhere over there", she replies, " He's the man in the tuxedo and rubber underwear"! The sun changes the barren mountains to watermellon colors. We join the crowd at the burning man. First we sit, then we stand, again we sit. Finally a troupe of half naked dancers twirl into view. They seem to be entranced. The fire starts. I'm trying to snap pictures, not lose my pack, keep track of my wife and not fall down all at the same time. My shitty camera jams as if the great beyond is displeased with my feeble attempts to chronicle something so strange. BURNING HORSE Other stuff starts to burn. We wander in the dark until magically and unexpectedly a trojan horse looms out of the expanse. Our timing is exquisit as the torch is applied right then. At first the horse won't light and an phalanx of naked men re-apply the torches. They stab at the open belly of the beast. The crowd is surley. They want to let the obvious media types know they are not welcome. "Sit down!" cry the masses. It is true that the press are up to the usual trick of getting in the way in the name of the public right to know. That doesn't work at burning man and the camera people are routed! Suddenly the horse alights with a seriousness that is alarming. The heat becomes intolerable and we fall back. The desert becomes day. The horse's head bows down to the money alter in front of it, then falls off on fire. The blaze intensifies and finally the horse drops to its knees as if taking a bullet, then falls dead into a bon-fire. The night sky looks like the Kuwait desert during the Gulf war. There is darkness, and pyres in all directions. Strange booms echo across the black. One fire hurts the eyes - magnesium as it turns out - and casts a brutal shadow long and stark. Sleep comes to me like morphine being administered to a wounded soldier. We emerge from the desert to discover Diana has been crushed like a fly. Was she a Goddess symbol? What intense grief seems to pour out for her! We are now away from the magic kingdom. (c) 1997 Frederick Gault -- Fred Gault, September 2, 1997 at 7:49p
p.s. -- please write! To jog yer memory, I was the tall blond guy wearing the following t-shirts: "I'm so FUCKING ALTERNATIVE", "Interval Research Corporation", "screwball Daffy", "fireflies", and "Frank Zappa for president". Thanks! -- Craig Latta, September 2, 1997 at 7:47p
Deep and penetrating joy and playful disintegration along with eye candy by the fistful. My appreciation for the foul beauty of my fellow humans has increased by several quanta. Encore! Encore! But this time, let's have dumpsters for the trash and clean the toilets more often. -- Mike Murphy, September 2, 1997 at 7:44p
I accidentally ate the ball from my tongue piercing on the first day of the Burn. Thanks to the combined engineering efforts of several people from my camp and some nearby camps, a temporary device was fashioned out of a match stick and a hunk of duct tape which kept my piercing intact for the entire festival. It was me against the desert. I won. -- Bethany Richards, September 2, 1997 at 7:39p
Burning Man is god! :) Never before had I felt such amazing surges of communal energy. The cheers that went up during the fashion show, when the 10-foot space alien and his lovely owner climbed on the runway, were absurdly wonderful. The burn was nirvana. I met so many wonderful people... the best! We'll keep Burning Man alive, I'm sure of it! Love! -- Craig Latta, September 2, 1997 at 7:36p
What a wonderful reimmersion in community. Those older folks who would like to carry the community we shared deeper into our daily lives are encouraged to contact and share your aspirations. -- Zegg ein Deuchland, September 2, 1997 at 7:34p
I like to thank my children Kevin & Shelly. they sent me tickets to Reno picked me up at the airport and we spent thurs.-Mon. placing ImPorTAnt in front of uRgeNt. What a purging. -- Gary Birch, September 2, 1997 at 7:34p
To all those with whom I danced, embraced, shared, laughed, and occasionally ralphed, thanks for sharing your heartspace, and headspace. Bianca, you taste so good! -- orgon box, September 2, 1997 at 7:32p
A renewal without peer, I now stand on the playa, or the curb, or the podium, or the cliff, or the mountaintop, and know that I am god... well I feel pretty good anyway. -- tergiversation termination, September 2, 1997 at 7:29p
Words can not describe the intence, electrical, erotic feeling glowing from the masses. Each night the sensation grew untill the ultimate explosion of The Man. See everyone next year. -- Trace, September 2, 1997 at 7:14p
all i can say is that i cant wait for next year! -- matt , September 2, 1997 at 7:09p
The burn was soulful and pagan and erotic and trippy and cleansing and and and and I felt outside myself as my heavily oiled naked body writhed to the emotive drumming and energy, extruding ourselves towards the man in an orgy of consciousness, the quinta cloth streaming like an extension of my altered self. I have never spontaneously ejaculated before, much less nude and in public. Who says god is dead, he is alive and present whenever we gather together to share our natural spiritual fluids with the fire. -- Satyr, September 2, 1997 at 7:07p
Thanks a million for my favorite time of the year -- love you'all -- danny williams, September 2, 1997 at 7:05p
Had a great time in the desert with every one.. you all are so awsome... Hope to see you again next year!! I am activley looking for someone in the reno area to work with on building a camp for the next Burning... If anyone wants to help out or has any ideas contact me!!! -- Joshua!, September 2, 1997 at 6:59p
I just wanted to thank everyone I met there this year. I made life long friends among you all. Larry's clarity of vision has helped me to solidify my own dreams. Peter, you're the greatest, and Kat, well, what can I say?...I fell in love with so many people, so much free creative energy. Thanks to everyone who came by the Starlust Lounge (alternatively, the Barter Bar). Bring that positive creative energy back with you. I'll see you all next year. -- Barry, September 2, 1997 at 6:57p
I must say that last weekend was one of the best weekends of my life! As a pyro living in the middle of a forest (Boulder Creek, CA), I am limited to what I can do... So Burning Man looks like the thing for me!. A friend told me about it several months back , so I gave him a check and said "Sure get me a ticket" not really knowing what I was getting into! Anyways, About a week back I realized that the weekend was growing near, and I asked my friend to see if he could get someone else to go, work was hectic for me. Well Thursday night rolled by and he still didn't have anyone, I wanted to go , so I said the hell with work, I'll go! So friday we packed up and headed out. We set up camp on the NW corner and had some really cool neighbors! We had one guy that is a Iron worker from SF with his GF, and had a couple of cool dudes from Tahoe on another side. Then some others from Utah! Well hello to those, (sorry I suck at remembering names!) if they read this, and I wanted to Say Hello to people I met! The girl that came on the Green Tortoise from SF that I helped off her stilts! Hope the handbag job is awesome! and have fun on your trip to Nashville! And to Chris from NY, have a safe trip home! Maybe next year, we will blow up a 5 gallon bottle of Propane this time, instead of the little ones! (check out <A HREF="http://www.armory.com/~taz/images/4th"> http://www.armory.com/~taz/images/4th </A>for my 4th of July activities!) And to the rest of the Black Rock citizens, THANK YOU for being so AWESOME! This was an event I don't plan on ever missing again! My year wont be complete without a visit to BM! I am making a WWW page for my pictures and experiences at BR City, so check it out in a week or so when I get my film back, and when I get back from Korea (business trip) <a href="http://www.armory.com/~taz/burningman"> http://www.armory.com/~taz/burningman </a> If anyone in the Santa Cruz area wants to join us, we are going to make a MASSIVE camp next year and have some interesting displays out on the playa, and in our camp. For one, I plan on building a helicopter life size to burn to show my protest to the damn police that woke us up every morning at 8 am buzzing our camp. And then of course late at night with that damn spotlight!!! Made it seem like East LA.. Sorry, its Black Rock City... Did we really need the Sheriff in the helicopter??????? While I am on complaints.. I found the dust level created by the sheriff trucks, the random idiot driving his car, and that damn bus flying by on the far off roads at high speed.. The dust still made its way to our camp... So back to the main thing.. Next year.. I heard rumor that BM is in the hole due to the helicopter? Is this true? If all goes well, We will be the camp with the spot light (or strobe light, we haven't decided yet) shooting into the sky like at the Luxor in Las Vegas, So stop by and say howdy! Have a GREAT year everyone and see ya next Labor Day! -- Chris Petrell, September 2, 1997 at 6:55p
Jeffrey - I am sorry for not getting it & hope I did not ruin your experience. Maybe next year? -- Princess, September 2, 1997 at 6:39p
I still can't even believe how strong the feelings are. Music, expression, emotion, play, thought, woven together by no one except a collective, cathartic vision. Hard to get over it, and I don't wanna. OH MY GOD... -- ridinthewave, September 2, 1997 at 6:37p
There's not room to list my feelings here. Leave it to say that, now, two days after the burn, I am still sniffing black playa dust, and the scent of smoke lingers in all my clothing. My heart pulses yet with the throb of drumming. I met some cool folks there. Neil, Jonathan, Eric, Barbara, Greg, Kimber, Emily, et al. .. .thanks for what we shared, although it seemed so minor at the time, it was the time of my life. Thank you Burning Man! Here's to '98!!! -- Phillip, September 2, 1997 at 6:34p
just hearing the city roar at the red clouds at sunset made my trip, let alone the burn. -- Chad Chittick, September 2, 1997 at 6:34p
Seventh largest city in Nevada changed my life forever. Swear to God. Most at home I've ever felt. Twinkle, Kevin, Chris and Dave, the 11,996 other friends; thanks, everybody, for doing this for us.. incidentally, I like smut. -- Tweety Fish, September 2, 1997 at 6:22p
Third time's a charm. Burning Man has always been a beautiful sight to see for me, but now I understand that it's also a beatiful thing to do. Speaking of which, does anyone know who set up the red tent of "everything holey?" I thought that was a great idea, and I'd like to hear how it turned out in the end. -- Josh Loftus, September 2, 1997 at 6:20p
Sooo many thanks to absolutely everyone involved....I'll be travelling the 6000 miles again next year..... -- invisible cola, September 2, 1997 at 6:18p
I must add a special thanks to the Cataclysmic Megasheer Ranch (L.A., Dallas, Georgia, etc...) . They welcomed me with open arms. I really felt the vibe coming from that camp. It's what's it's all about. The drum circle on Sunday night (Monday morning) was amazing. Peace & Love!!! -- Sean, September 2, 1997 at 6:16p
Did anyone see that giant 8 foot tall sculptural piece of rebar? Any comments on it? Suggestions for next year? -- Sorta wondering (the artist), September 2, 1997 at 6:11p
It was my first time at Burning Man, and I feel my life has changed forever. I left Burning Man with the feeling of community, and understanding of tolerance, and the feeling that such a creative event must be protected by people who believe in freedom. I would also like to say that the Washoe County Sherrifs office is great. This event was spiritual, ritualistic, beautiful, tribal, and educational. Thank you Larry Harvey. Thank you everybody. -- Miles Walker, September 2, 1997 at 6:06p
What can I say. Words cannot describe the experience. Only experience can tell the tale. I know no matter where I am, I'll be there. Looking forward to next year. I remember saying that the last time and thinking it was so far away, but the time came, and it passed and I feel like I did before. I'm very fortunate to have been a part of this. Much love and apprecation to everyone involved! !!!!!!!!!!! -- Sean, September 2, 1997 at 6:04p
i found my voice out there on saturday night after the mud peoples opera.. my friends started to drum and my voice was slowly born... i had no clue i could sing.. or that my voice could be so loud and full... thanks to the crazy drunk guys("wouldya lihka suhhm vaaaah-dkaaah?") who did some back up vocals.. and thanks to the burningman for releasing that crazy yayayayayayayayayaya thing that somehow i could do for a long time at a very high pitch... i have never felt so alive, or full, or *real* as i did at burningman...... -- ali, September 2, 1997 at 6:01p
it was difficult to leave BM; i cried all the way to town and almost jumped outta the car to hitchike back for the cocktail party at the house of doors. we worked all weekend, which was cool (i love feeding hot people cold fruit) but there was much more to experience. i wish i could have heard the sound garden for instance. thanks to all for the community, fuck you to nbc for the coverage, hey dj Mcgyver, thanks for almost giving me my first on-air experience and a guided playa tour. perhaps you have e-mail? it was pretty hard to drive by the Wailers...how could you pass that up? (next year i'm driving!) i enjoyed the happy guy that talked sleepy folk into playing frisbee early sat morn. talk more later, but plans for a reunion? do we hafta be hot to have community? -- kat, September 2, 1997 at 5:52p
CHEERS to Christine. The Cold Kegs of ale from Steelhead Brewery were a tasty treat. You made many parched passersby very happy as well as your camp mates. Nice selection, an amber and a wheat, but you had three taps on that box. Where was the stout? Just kidding. Thanks again. -- kev, September 2, 1997 at 5:51p
Thanks for the coolest knees up I've ever been to. Mike. -- Michael O'Neill, September 2, 1997 at 5:49p
Lost Sunday Night on the playea a Fuji disposable camera. It had 13 picuters left. If you have found it and took the remaining pictures, great. Please return the ones I took to me. If you didn't take any please return it me. If you have some pictures on the film and haven't gotten it developed I would be more than happy to develope them for you. You see I have no other means of discribing what took place on Sunday night to friends. ( I'm sure you understand) Those pictures can never be taken again. Please hell Bondage, September 2, 1997 at 5:47p
It was almost too overwhelming for me. I have never felt my passion for life so deeply before. All that I have ever wish for humanity seemed to be alive and thriving. Burning Man, and all it represents, has been a quest of mine for years, I will always come back to celebrate the dance of the tribes. To everyone "Thank you for hearing me." -- mike sigmann, September 2, 1997 at 5:43p
Not sure where to start in writing down what went on. Not sure if I write what went on it will sound real or even plausible. I think the most profound thing to say is that it was magical, artistic, moving, and inspirational. It was a theater of the absurd, where you are the cast and there is no director. A true dadaist event which has been grossly misunderstood by the media. It is not the burn, it’s the whole experience. The artists who created the theme camps, even the small ones that weren’t on the map, made the event come alive. If you were not drug into someone’s camp and offered food, water, shade, a tropical drink in a coconut shell complete with an umbrella or invited into a twister game that was played with textures instead of colors or given an odd bicycle to ride (pedal camp), you stayed in your tent the whole time. NO SPECTATORS! Except maybe for the last day, this was so true. CHEERS TO THE CAST OF THOUSANDS. -- one of the cast, September 2, 1997 at 5:41p
At first I was uncomfortable with all the changes, location, number of people etc. but eventually I remembered the thing I loved most about last year - it is there so that you can do whatever you want to do - once you remember that it is easy to tune out the things that you don't like and you're able to adapt to them. -- shawn, September 2, 1997 at 5:34p
I didn't know how to explain to my friends and aquaintances where I was going before I left, and even after attending don't know exactly what to say. Probably because it truly defies explanation. Burning Man is what you make it, it is a forum of unrestricted self-expression. It is a place to go and experiment with ideas that society might consider uncivilized or taboo (usually for all the wrong reasons, the biggest being ignorance and fear.) Unfortunately, the people who could benefit most are probably the last people you'd find attending by their own choice. I do know for sure that it was a very positive experience for those of us involved, indeed. I'm a permanent resident of Black Rock City, for sure. If we have to put up with choppers and red tape, fine. Repression must be fought, this sure is worth it. Hats off to Larry and all of the volunteers, thank you. -- Greg Kiskaden, September 2, 1997 at 5:20p
BARTERTOWN thanks everyone who ventured out to the 'burbs to barter stories and stuff. An especially big thank you to the CALLIPYGOS folks for the group butt-painting on Saturday! See y'all next year! -- Kevin, September 2, 1997 at 5:14p
Wow. I'm the headcam guy and I'm dubbing the whole thing, wonder how to post many hours of video to the net? If anyone wants to help, let me know. Till then I'll just keep playing the tape over and over again. Hope to see y'all again next year! -- justfred, September 2, 1997 at 5:13p
Absolute chaos 24 hours a day. I'll be back next year. I loved it!! -- Aurora Meerjans, September 2, 1997 at 5:11p
My first Bman and Tears fill my eyes with EXPLOSIVE emotion. Sunday morning people are so confused about what it all means- WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS- THRIVE on DIFFERENCE!! It sure does make life much more fun ;) Take care everyone. You people are brilliant! I WILL SEE YOU DEFINITELY NEXT YEAR!! K.I.T. -- Ray Fred, September 2, 1997 at 5:10p
To my fellow lamplighters. That was a wonderful experience within a wonderful experience. Thank you. -- Kevin Byall, September 2, 1997 at 5:06p
I am so glad I made the trek to the burn this year! (Thanks Carmi for convincing me to go.) I was hesitant of what changes there might be, due to all the added sheriff and fire presence... but was pleasantly rewarded. The spirit that exists at Burning Man can never be dampened. It is something that can only be experienced, not explained. Thanks to those who contributed their creativity in all forms... your efforts are recognized and appreciated. To all the new friends I made, and old ones who have been with me before, thanks for enriching my life in ways you will never know. Special thanks go to Kevin... keep in touch. -- Karin, September 2, 1997 at 5:06p
Wow!!! My 3rd year. Loved the sense of community in ‘95 but ‘96 just didn’t have the participation needed to create the kind of energy we had prior. That all changed back this year. SO MANY PARTICIPANTS!!! Almost veryone did something. And if they were a new comer to this event and didn’t do much I heard the. SO MANY PARTICIPANTS!!! Almost veryone did something. And if they were a new comer to this event and didn’t do much I heard them say “Next year I am really gonna do something!” You know what. I bet they do! -- Anon., September 2, 1997 at 5:04p
sorry, could'nt make it this year .maybe next time. -- eric ivan hurban, September 2, 1997 at 4:59p
Best experience of my life. I can't believe the power that all of you have helped me see within myself. Love to you all. James, thank you for your truth and guidance and for helping me to see some stuff. -- Pamela, September 2, 1997 at 4:58p
Melissa from SanFrancisco camped under the Twister Flag! I never caught up with you after we parted and hoped you might scan these here messages. You were the most prepared person in camp that night (sat.) and you gave me tin foil and a lollipop and let me use your flashlight. I hope the rest of your night was a good one and that you made it back to your camp alright. This has changed my life. I was so tired of the way I was living always wanting to create software that told stories and fuck'm LIVE. but I went to Burning man out of spite and now I am changing my course in life to do what I want for a living THANK YOU -- exis, September 2, 1997 at 4:39p
if you are interested in saving the man and have something to contribute to the cause [other than money which can be sent to the project directly] please e-mail me with your suggestions and resources available for a possible benefit. thank you. -- jaime, September 2, 1997 at 4:38p
Absolutely the most bullshit blowing and inspiring experience of my long and often futile life. Thank you to every one who participated, from the dedicated organizational brains to the many passing smiles on the playa, and everyone around, over, under, and in between. BTW if you found a sperm medallion with a BM sticker on the back (I think I lost night Sunday night running and howling around the Man), please let me know. You can keep it. I just want to know if I got to an appreciative home. Love You All! -- Cliff Raker, September 2, 1997 at 4:28p
My big burningman experience happened right in my Living Room in Boulder, Colorado. I found out there was now way in hell I was gonna be able to get off work and ride my BMW motorcycle out to NEvada. I WAS PISSED and nearly quit my job. Actually I think I'm gonna get fired anyway. Then I saw burningman on CNN. Now, I think after I get fired next week, I'm gonna have my own private little burningman in the Utah desert. Anyone want to join me? -- S. Tyler Young, September 2, 1997 at 4:26p

Hi all, this was my first time, and definetly will not be the last. It was a fabolous experience, walking in outer space from one planet to the other. Only problem in the all time, somebody borrowed our BIKE and never returned. We were on the playa front, next to the Black light district, our camp was called Spore and we had a collective Mandala in front of the tent. The bike is a mountain bike with GREEN tires, please email me so that I can take it back to next year event....I already got my ticket! Thanks to all for the wonderful experience. -- rita, September 2, 1997 at 4:10p
i think the burning man rules and would like to be a part of it in the future. Keep it up i want to get out in the desert with all my furniture.HaHa. Well i gots to go ! *¥oDa* -- jon travolta, September 2, 1997 at 4:10p
I am having BM withdrawal. Words can't describe how intense it was. The only negative thing I have to say about the whole thing is the cost of the speeding ticket I got on my way home. I think $160 is a bit steep for 85 mph in a 75 mph zone, don't you? TANYA, love, sorry I didn't say bye before we left. You were all asleep still. The pictures of you all turned out great. Hello again to the Australian living in S.F. on Haight, (I can't recall your name). Hope to see you again. To all that were there, I will see you next year... -- KENT, September 2, 1997 at 4:05p
The Wailers free concert in Reno Monday was the perfect way to come down before hitting reality at full force. The Burnsters brought the crowd up to a new Wailing level. I hope the Wailers play the Nugget next year after the Burn too. They were fucking hot. Not as hot as the Man Sunday night however. -- Sean of the Universe (White), September 2, 1997 at 4:05p
This was my first year at the Burn. It won't be my last. I will be in Australia next year but I will get back for it. Can anyone tell me the name of the band of drummers and musicians that played till dawn on sunday night, I know they were from Austin. They were great. Please post more info about finances. I will send something. I be back next with a big crew and site. Long live Black Rock city. The best temporary autonomous zone in the world. I miss it so much already. -- Alien Resident, September 2, 1997 at 3:48p
Guitarist @ House of Doors, Fri Night. Anybody know the name of this guy or how to get in touch with the HOD people ? He was playing around 10pm and completely blew my mind. Thanks, -- John, September 2, 1997 at 3:46p
Just wanted to say hi again to the lovely gal from Oceanside who christened us "the outsiders". Your energy lit up the night. -- The Outsiders, September 2, 1997 at 3:44p
Hey, to the English girl (whom I wittily called Australian) whom I yelled at to sit down during the burning of the man... I apologize for being angry at you. Sorry. -- anon, September 2, 1997 at 3:43p
HEY! ****SOMEONE BORROWED MY BIKE**** ('cause I hope no one would STEAL IT) It is an Emerald Green KHS and it was at the SPIRAL OASIS next to my car... I hope you liked the Lazer show, now, PLEASE PLEASE email me and return my bike. I know you feel dumb, but hey, it's ok, just get ahold of me, I'll pay for shipping! No harm done! Yeah, this year was different, but still surreal and totally unlike anything else this world has to offer. Want to thank Spiral Oasis for the great cocktail party and for providing those "tape worms" that made it easy for us to find our way home. Also, thanks to Bianca's light and to the camp that had the blinking white spinning light that guided us home every night. Thank you Brian and Ferris for being such great neighbors, Stephen for the pineapple, the Henna camp for your beautiful creations, and to all those that appreciate yellow feathers. The art, music, drums, dancing, fire, singing, laughter, lights, and smokey-dusty air will forever be a part of me. Thanks to all that organized, participated, and made this extraordinary event happen. Love you and will see you all again next year! -- Kay, aka Lola, September 2, 1997 at 3:23p
As I read the messages of others I realized I forgot the most important expression of gratitude-TO TRACE, JAY, DAVE, DOUG, CLIFFORD, MARIE, PAT, ANGELA, KELLY, JOSEPH, JOHNNY, AND MY GOLDEN GODDESS SARAH-you all made this the best experience of my life and I look forward to many more to come. There are far too many people to thank for the experience I had but these free spirited individuals made me realize how great the world still is. To everyone at Burning Man 1997-thank you. Sarah, good luck with all you endeavor to achieve-the training for next year's desert race has begun, hopefully next time I can keep up without having to drag the bike through the playa! Lots of FOND MEMORIES. -- Stephen Bowen, September 2, 1997 at 3:23p
I met my angelic, toe-headed, magically delicious neighbor on Friday (or was it Saturday). Regardless, he rocked my BM world with the first cleverly innocent smile. Bad fortune.. I had to squelch the most instrinsic of wants...extremely painful. e, if you're flipping through this board, please respond by leaving your address. -- "Lucy" in the skirt with pigtails, September 2, 1997 at 3:20p
Some of these posts are so critical, I simply wanted to place here a word of positivity. Thank you, to the producers, who obviously went through massive bureaucratic bullshit to pull this off. You did a most excellent thing. And to the critics here, perhaps you should roll up your sleeves next year, hmmm? I sure will be! The Temple of Atonement was my camp, but the Playa was my home. I thank you, Burning Man Producers, for this most brilliant of experiences. -- We, who share the fire... it burns hotter than blood. It burns within our hearts, and guides us back to earth. Just thought I'd add a little something here. Burning Man was way better than expected. I too thought that the new location and rules would destroy what was previously the best event in the world. I would like to say that also, for those of you who feel that a helicopter isn't necessary, it is. Not a news helicopter, but an EMS heli is vital. I know it was used last year, not sure about this one. I feel that just about all the police could have been replaced with firefighters, but they were very cool besides. And definately, those firefighters played an important role for Burning Man. The coolest experience for me? Some high as a kite idiot runs under the burning man, as it is being torched, and that firefighter leaps up there and grabs him down right before huge flames land where he was. Amazingly dramatic. So, next year, pat a firefighter on the back, cause he made this year death-free, and hey, that's pretty hip. Later all. -- David, September 2, 1997 at 3:06p
My playa brethren~ There are not enough words to express my feelings about the Burn, and the Man. He stood there, like a proud sentinel, protecting us all. By day, he was a wooden angel. By night, a glowing beacon. My heart actually ached, as he burned. I felt we had lost our guardian. And then the most amazing thing happened... I realized that *we* were the guardian's. Guarding, and guiding eachother. Protecting one another from the harshnesses of the desert of life. Scout. Fadda. My head bows to you in heartfelt appreciation for your kindness and assistance. My deepest thanks to the beautiful Stephanie, Anna, and the whole tribe from Canada, and *Uma Da Van*, for the initial rescue of our supplies from the playa surface... And of course my Temple Brethren, who got us home safe. We are One. This was the first year, officially, for the Temple Of Atonement. We will be back, en force~ Thank you for letting us share the experience with you~ -- We, who share the fire... it burns hotter than blood. It burns within our hearts, and guides us back to earth. May we ever be cleansed by playa dust. Ever Your Loyal Servant~ ~~Madame~~ -- ~Madame at the Temple Of Atonement~, September 2, 1997 at 3:06p
BURNING MAN '97 We start out in the black of night To an unknown place, no wrong no right Then up ahead glowing in the dark Is the figure of a man standing straight and stark As time passes by new realities are created The old fabric of Being seems dim and faded To some it is rave, to others it is art To some it is watching, still others are a part So much to see, so much to do Nothing required, except to be you Naked or clothed you can come and go Only you are the judge of your living soul And to what purpose it has at this time is not clear We know only that soon it will no longer be here Soon it will burn and crumble to the ground And lie in ashes to be blown aroud We know there is only a short time in hand Then we too will be gone like the Burning Man Paul G. 9/02/97 -- paul christensen, September 2, 1997 at 3:05p
I came, I saw, I experienced. Burning Man will touch me the rest of my life. Trying to capture the whole feast into some sort of journaling is my next challenge, but first impression is that Burning Man has a bazillion levels to it. On the surface, it is a feast without boundaries or limitations, and a place for creativity without ANY corporate influence. Inwardly, it touched my heart, soul and spirit. Everywhere were people, ideas, and creations that confirmed there really ARE people that can make a differnce in this world. -- Doug Greene, September 2, 1997 at 3:02p
To Ingrid, Neal (Neil?), Bud and Devan: Thank you for being such generous and friendly neighbors. It was so nice of you to share your Bedouin-like carpeted camp, wonderful food & drink with me. E-mail me and I'll look you up next time I'm in SF, if you would like. Nicholas -- Nicholas Corwin, September 2, 1997 at 2:57p
One of the great things about Burning Man is that the search for its meaning left to the individual. Being a BM virgin, I wondered before we left for BM '97 what meaning I would find. The night of the burn I found one of its meanings for me. The burning of the Man represents the falling away of our outer crust of who we pretend to be as we live in a society that constantly strives to control and restrict us. Burning Man illustrates how powerful we can be when we use our hearts to direct us rather than the mind's knowledge of rules and regulations. To me, Burning Man is the enactment of City with Heart. WOW! You folks that put up your time to make BM happen already know you're great! You've been told a million times. Well, here's one million and one! THANKS! To Harley, thanks for putting up with our dance music...I owe you! Let's work on that aerobics tape for you, OK? To Marian who sold the three of us the lifetime Burning Man tix at the gate as we left... I told the guys I wanted to move to Burning Man... I consider your receipt my proof of residency! -- Jef Kennedy, September 2, 1997 at 2:54p
whO CARES ABOUT CAMERA'S??? They're harmless and can even be fun!!! But helicopters??? who needs 'em. I'll bet there were dozen's mor arrests in REno?Sparks than the one in at Black Rock!! What a pathetic display by the Sherrif departmentof a need to be something and someone that matters. -- THOR, September 2, 1997 at 2:51p
ISHTAR ABSOLUTELY RULED!!!!!! THE IMAGINATION IS THE ABSOLUTE KINGDOM. -- THOR, September 2, 1997 at 2:45p
As a virgin Burning Man citizen, I want to say that I have been touched by the experience of the community. In my life, never has such occured to me. For those who stopped by our Mud pool, it was a pleasure hanging out with you. Look for us next year again. Cheers - Rich Johnson -- Rich Johnson, September 2, 1997 at 2:43p
Bman is the ULTIMATE damnit! I'm sitting here watching, reading, post after post appear. Such a collective force.. I miss everything so much already. The opportunity to create, participate, and experience w/o predjudice or judgement is one of the most powerful and exciting communities ever created! ...and yes, Ishtar was "The Shit"!! It RULED!! -- Angel, September 2, 1997 at 2:26p
Thank you to all that plan and help make BM happen and all that attended. It was a wonderful frenzied experience renewing faith in the creative spirit and expectation of others and myself. Given all the constraints BM97 was just right. What great menagerie of collective expression BM makes. Every day every moment was BM. Thanks to the weather for the sky. Thank you to Rawb for Saturday nights "Satan's Spit Wads." We threw burning rolls of kerosene soaked TP with baskets on sticks in an arching blaze. All that came to watch and those that came to dodge and kick those spit wads made sure chaos was in perfect order. -- david, September 2, 1997 at 2:19p
SHELLY!!!! from Reno. Email me if you see this...how was the rest of your experience? ...Jamie with the pants -- jamie salay, September 2, 1997 at 2:13p
As usual, I had the most wonderful experience of the year. Ishtar was 'THE SHIT' -an amazing performance by all especially the nymph who let me drink from her breast. The art work all about was awesome as usual. Thanks to spiral oasis for the mellow tunes on Sat am as well as the Wizard of OZ sountrack...that ruled. Burningman is all about human adaptation in a hostile environment, being prepared, being creative, and preparing creatively and with care for those around. My main bitch goes to those careless ***** who littered the burn and who did not pack out what you brought or bought, leaving in empty cars (ie, no trash), thus leaving the place a mess and dumping your garbage next to the porta jons leaving it for someone else to deal with-YOU SUCK! As for the Washoe cty Sherriffs deputies they were totally cool, however, next year buy a ticket like everyone else, stop extorting the project just because you can...IT'S WRONG AND INJUST and for crying out loud leave the $1000/hr chopper toy in the city where it belongs!!!That's all. I LOVE BM P.S.-there were NO ORGIES...it was all your imagination. Leave it at that. no more hype!!! -- anon, September 2, 1997 at 2:12p
For me BM97 was a totally excellent experience. There are so many positives I can't even begin to describe them. So I'd like to point out the few negatives in hope of inspiring improvement in the future. (1) "spectators" do subtract from the event. We are all spectators at times, but those who come only to "watch the freaks" annoy me. Maybe it is wrong to exclude anyone, but I feel they do not belong. and this leads to my next point. (2) The media does not belong. In my mind they are to blame for "normalizing" everything. Exactly what I see BM doing, the media will undo. Sure it's good to spread the word, but I hope to never see Burning Man footage on the Six o'clock news. Where/how can I get a BM sticker (with just an image of the man)??? PS. I am the guy who was running around with the "Free your mind & your ass will follow" sign. FYI it is a George Clinton quote. -- jamie salay, September 2, 1997 at 2:09p
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I came to my second burning with great skepticism about the new location and the new level of organization. I will never doubt again. POWERFUL! MOVING! MY OLD SELF HAS BEEN TORCHED! I AM REBORN! The energy of this community now has a life of its own. Changes such as these cannot disrupt it for long. Now we are confronted with a real obstacle. Bankruptcy of the organization and founders. Are we community enough to pull together our resources and overcome it? SAVE BURNING MAN!!! See you next year. -- Hanuman Arpelion Pax, September 2, 1997 at 1:57p
the ART is a big factor in this event's greatness....i loved the scale model solar system scattered about the playa, the tent filled with cooling blue candles (and practical blue condoms), the windchime structure, the blinking blue lights in the dusty playa floor (alien landing strip?), all the variations on color-filled mushroom parachute structures, the friendly mystery dome, the hanging white cloth strips at the SE corner, the sinister yet silly "trojan duck", all of the elegant expressions manifested in pvc, etc. etc. etc....appreciation to those who took the time to plan and accomplish such thoughtful art thingies -- paulina, September 2, 1997 at 1:57p
It was my third year and the best ever. The new rules were more successful than I expected at allowing the creativity in while keeping some of last year's evils out. The media was abundant but for the most part civilized, their questions this year being more along the lines of "what does burning man mean to you" than the previous "did you get naked? Do you worship satan?" As for the financials, I've heard all kinds of rumors -- that Burning Man is $100,000 in the hole, that Burning Man is not in the hole at all and Larry is making tons of money off of it. I'm much more likely to believe the first than the second, but really, I don't care. I'm sending in my $25 extra, because Burning Man is worth so much more than $100 to me. If indeed someone makes money off of providing me with such a numinous experience as Burning Man, then that seems so much more appropriate than someone making money off of the unimportant Coca Cola I'm drinking right now. If you agree with me, be sure to show it in cash mailed directly to the Burning Man organizers... :-) -- Kathleen, September 2, 1997 at 1:49p

One of the finest weekends in my lifetime - not for everyone, but definitely for me - the kind of event that makes you rush home anxious to prepare for the following year. Yes, I'm a newbie, but I really am thankful for the opportunity to PARTICIPATE. The naysayers were sucking the life out of the event beforehand, but I think the effort of the organization proved them wrong. Sure it was different, but it by no means was bad. There is nothing that will prevent me from coming as long as the event exists, so people had just better prepare to die on some other weekend. -- Glen, September 2, 1997 at 1:12p
LOST: ROLL OF FILM with Burning Man pix! My friend lost a roll of film (not sure what brand, but it's in a clear plastic canister) somewhere in the vicinity of the Man right after the burn. Gosh...I just got home from the most incredible experience of my life and I see so many negative reactions it really saddens me. Yes I must admit it was my first year but for those who believe "it has died" ....it has not" ...because it still inspires! It has moved me, rocked me, changed me, and invigorated me.... remember those who are still being inspired by its magic ...in fact I would take a helicoptor over my head before I would take such bummer non inspirational attitudes. So...major standing ovation to those who make it happen.... Total religious experience at the "sound garden" and "time melting sundial" ..conceptual beautiful, uniquely amazing...really can't find words...just an outer body experience to be remembered and recalled whenever possible... so thanks!!!! I, and thousands of others, have been moved and inspired to make the Great Really Fucking Difficult Life Attempt to create such incredible passionate creative positive energy in our daily lives..and the more we can spread this message the better our chances we can save our sorry selves from eating each other, and this planet, alive. Perhaps in its largeness it has evolved from an event to a movement and those who inspired should be proud. An unreal amount of work and energy. I have been moved.... -- Ellen, September 2, 1997 at 1:07p
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for making Burning Man a great experience for me yet again. Sure there was a lot of media and yaddah yaddah, but I think that people who are complaining about that are giving away too much power over their own lives and their own Burning experience. I had an excellent time, met some truly wild and trippy and wonderful people and loved being covered in playa dust once again. I will be back next year. I loved the Spiral Oasis, the chill music and cool air tubes. Thanks again, everyone. -- john, September 2, 1997 at 12:53p
geez people! all things in life HAVE to be different to be alive. burning man has NEVER been about one thing or being one way. i think it's great they pulled through and had it. My first time at BM was last year where I had a brilliant time. I came this year with a much smaller group because most of my original group were put off by price and media hype. I was a bit sceptical when I entered the gates and we tried to find a spot in the new layout - thought maybe all those people I left behind in SF were going to be right. WRONG! I had a MORE FABULOUSLY, FUN TIME this year. Everyone particpated with these great theme tents (We did a small theme tent - ClubMedEVIL) - there were lots more than last year, loved how close it was to the hot springs (although Robert - the small bus driver in the bus with the dead cow - I would suggest you don't drive that bus again in that head state, it got a bit too dangerous!), thought that the layout was ok because even though everyone was more cramped in it meant there was more sociable interaction with those next door, loved all those extra little things that were put in areas for amazement and amuzement(e.g small flashing lights put into the ground in the middle of the playa "oooh what's this? giggle giggle), media didn't bother me, fire crew were great, rangers were great (I'm sure they all had a fun time), thought it was a good call that you didn't have those big rave tents and there were more little sound systems set up - it got rid of all those that didn't participate last year in the whole original idea anyway and are just rave obsessed, bravo to all those of you that organized, stuck with it, volunteered and worked so hard to put this on so everyone could have a great fun lovin' time, IT WAS WORTH THE $75 and I'm sorry you are in debt. Please leave an address on the site so we can mail in donations. -- Kate, September 2, 1997 at 12:32p

Being at Burning Man really made me realize just how *few* material possessions are necessary for being happy and healthy. When there is less consumer-materialistic-mass-market STUFF around, there's more contemplation, contentment, and creativity. This is not to say that I'm rejecting the idea of collecting and owning things, it's to say that I want to figure out exactly WHAT out of the "sea of stuff" in my possession actually MATTERS to me, and get rid of the rest. This is the lesson I learned in the desert. -- Laura La Gassa, September 2, 1997 at 12:23p

thanks you thank you thank you-- to all the people giving so much love away at camp sunscreen; to danger, shabumi and the rest of the awesome rangers, to the daughters (and sons) of ishtar-- to all of you who helped make this a wonderful experiance. For a few short days, we were the wildest, safest, most generous and open minded city in america. you should all be proud of having created a place of such understanding and generosity. I got choked up when radio free burning man finally faded out driving past Empire. The wonderful thing is, the police said they had no real problems on burn night. The Wash Post said it this am-- the man will be back, and when he is I will be there!! One more thing: remember how you felt, remember the understanding about yourself you discovered, and then send in a little something to help cover the people who put THEIR OWN MONEY up to finance this thing and are going to loose their shirts thanks to Washoe Co. this is a community, we should all do what we can to keep the glow going. the address is Bman, PO bOx 420572, San Francisco, CA 94142 love you all! -- Tom Price, September 2, 1997 at 12:14p

At Play in the Field with the Hordes! Thanks to everyone for being into SPURT 102.5 FM, our mobile solar powered radio station, and letting us interview and plug your camps, and to the kid with the duck for his staying power in the "group honk". A HUGE thanks to our SPURT Girls, they got us more attention then our signs and solar-blended-margarita giveaway together! As for the site, it was harder to camp on and tough to drive our cart on, but hey, what about those killer hot springs?!?! I think it was worth it. Only thing to nag on: the helicopter was only mildly annoying UNTIL the SPURT crew had to miss the big burn because of trying to take care of a passed out and convulsing guy under the neon "W", which was fine except for the damn chopper flying by 4 times with us waving glow sticks and flashlights trying to get help. The bike-security guys and their radio to the ambulance proved MUCH more helpful. Don't even THINK of asking us to pay for your helicopter toy next year Mr. County Beaurocrat. Nothing but love to everyone else out there. Let's do it again next year. Same bat-time? Same bat-channel? -- Captain D, September 2, 1997 at 12:05p

INCREDIBLE!! I finally felt a feeling of "home", and that home is Black Rock City. Once a BM-Virgin, I'm definatly a permanent resident. The massive energy from the culmination of such expression is cleaning to the soul. From discussing Philosophy with Larry on Thursday night, to the Temple of Ishtar (WOW! THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL!! I was DEEPLY moved by the massive production! Kudos to ALL involved. I am so impressed, I only wish I could have been a part of something so wonderfully done. Absolutely incredible. Amazing. I cant even express words about how great that was!) to the Burn, just 100% creative greatness. I was so sad to leave. Thank you to everyone who attended, every creature in attendance created such tremendous energy! I am SO charged. Unfortunately I was, at times, a camera person. Although very respectful to those I took pictures of, I felt bad even HAVING a damn camera. The experience is SO sacred, its almost as if shouldnt leave the playa. But..but.. the people... their creations... themselves.. I didnt want to ever forget any of it.. ever. I hate myself for capturing the pictures -like a caged animal, its just not right- but you are all so very beautiful. Burning Man has thoroughly cleaned me, and again I thank you all. Especially all of those who worked so hard to make sure the magic happened this year. Thank you. Thank you ALL!! -- Angel, September 2, 1997 at 11:58a

Last year I didn't go because I thought "that B-Man thing has already sold out." Then I heard great things...this year was my first and I was incredibly impressed. What I saw was a gathering of the many different tribes that worship fire coming together to build something out of nothing. We were all nomads putting down our stakes and I met many great people. Following the SPURT girls around, I would suggest that people ask to take photos since I only saw men tripping over themselves to take pictures of the five beutiful, topless women walking together across the camp. My best experiences were when I got to participate at the festival-being a part of it, not just an observer. I'm hooked for sure! -- Leonard, September 2, 1997 at 11:31a

ohmygawd! that was the best thing that's ever happened in my life. I can not even imagine not going next year. my favorite memory was the fairy camp next to us. these kids flew out from texas with all their stuff, rented a car in reno and looked so damn adorable the entire time. it was an honor to be part of such a life changing experience. I had tears in my eyes (not from dust) as we drove off the playa...I didn't want to leave! see you all next year, let's keep in touch with each other so the feeling never dies...love you all! -- Mary Beth, September 2, 1997 at 11:24a
Despite my initial misgivings over the size and the number of people, I enjoyed myself and had a wonderful time. No cars and encouraging bikes worked very well given the size of the site. I missed the playa though. I liked the ritual before the man burned this year compared to the quick burn of last year. I thought the person in the asbestos suit was incredibly brave (and perhaps a little foolhardy). People seemed to take more responsibility for their actions this year compared to last year, which made things go smoother. However, the greater media presence annoyed me and many others. Although Burning Man calls itself a non-consumer event, many people were selling things, from bumper stickers to sno-cones to rides. I have fewer problems with selling an experience (a ride on a dome) than with selling material goods, but given the financial situation of the event, I would hope those selling anything donated some of their profits back to Burning Man. I do not know how to eliminate this aspect of the event, but would rather see barter as a method of payment, or perhaps an option, rather than cash. Although I am not sure whether I will return next year, I really hope the organizers can come up with the funds they need so the event can continue. I will be sending in a check this month. I encourage all who can send in money to do so, even if it's only $5 or $10. -- Lori, September 2, 1997 at 11:16a
Ahhh, the man burnt and so did my outer skin giving me space and movement to grow into another year. I thank all the people who participated in the 'Say Something Soap Box' as well as the 'Wheel of Distortion'. The studio audience and the three contestants were fucking amazing. Burningman has been much darker in years past, but that was the sign of the times. I was happy to see a positive change in attitudes. Love to you all... PS. My silver Diamond Back WCF Vertex mountain bike was stolen Sunday night. I know it's a long shot- but, any info would be appreciated, that’s the cool thing about the internet!!!! Peace up. burning man can only be saved by those who want it bad enough. it is obvious to me that every person who just experienced their first burn has been touched in a way never had before, just as i had at my first a year aef="mailto:walstib@microweb.com">jaime, September 2, 1997 at 11:16a

Thanks to Rich and Shirley for the steak on Saturday night. Also thanks to the breakfast Santa Claus near the blue shroom. (We picked up our trash) -- Philip, September 2, 1997 at 11:14a
After several years of saying "yeah, I'm really going to go this year," I finally got it together to do it this year, and I will never miss it again. What an incredible experience of joy, cooperation and enthusiasm- what a celebration of the creative spirit! Rejuvenating to be in a non-consumerist, non-judgemental environment- a reminder to carry those values into my daily life. Next year I plan to bring more to conribute- to go all out in creating my camp and making an experience to invite others into, as they did for me. A glorious initiation. Thanks to everyone. -- Erin Keating, September 2, 1997 at 11:09a

It was Amazing, like The Wizard of Oz. I can't wait until next year! -- Vickie Metcalf, September 2, 1997 at 11:07a
I'm trying to describe the experience to people and it just doesn't come across. You had to be there. I nearly had tears in my eyes when I left Monday morning. Reading these posts brings back all the joy and happiness. I never saw the media. The helecopters didn't bother me. I just imagined them as giant insects buzzing around. To all those who were too hip to make it because of all the hype: You missed out! Sure, the media reports make it all sound lurid (and it was! :-) ), the reality was something magical. -- michael foti, September 2, 1997 at 11:07a

The most fantastic outpouring of ideas, dreams, life force and good feeelings in one place, at one time, that I have ever experienced. A blank canvas upon which so much generosity and love poured forth. Art, music beauty all in one swirling, floating carefree space. Lets get one going in every city and really shake things up!!! Smaller scale, evry city- wow- that would bring about the vision of artistic renaissance!!! -- Stiff, September 2, 1997 at 11:00a
As a member of Earthbound Medical, I was pleased to see so many more people paying attention to basic survival. I saw lots more water, and much less heat exhaustion. I saw fewer sunburns. I saw dewer out-of-control drug OD's. I saw NO rebar wounds. Congrats guys! Good show. I actually got a chance to sleep and see some sights, in addition to working. Great party! -- Emily, September 2, 1997 at 10:54a

I'm back to this so called reality of everyday life, but if I had the best moments that I've had in years inside a mud pool at Burningman; you know that I'll will count everyday till next year's labor day and that reality I loved there. Thanks to all the organizers, all the people who made an effort and did something to share with all of us, thanks for all the attendants and participants, thank for whatever powers made all this possible; but must important THANK there is a place and time for BURNINGMAN to be -- Antonio, September 2, 1997 at 10:52a

Incredible atmosphere...one of Peace, Freedom and Tolerance. To all who honored these three words...Thank you. Loved ALL the artistic expression. Thanx to Rose and John for the Cuscos and Pasta on Sat. night. (We came into camp late and not only did you welcome us next to your campsight, but fed us and set the tone for the entire Burning Man experience.) Thanx for the pipe Jay...hope you had a safe trip back, (don't get a ticket in Gerlach like me!!) It was almost difficult to comprehend the trust and giving attitudes when all around us everyday is greed and selfishness. Burning Man MUST go on.... -- paul, September 2, 1997 at 10:47a
1997 was my first Burning Man and I'm already counting down the days until next Labor Day...planning my camp...gathering my tribe...rallying the energy...and exalting in the afterglow of an amazing weekend of community and learning. My experience was maybe more private than others, my exuberence less indicated by costume or volume, but my soul reverberated at a different frequency for 36 hours, and the continuing resonance fuels inspiration for a life less ordinary. Thank you all for sharing yourselves. I look forward to more and more and more.... A special note to all drummers... thank you for providing the pulse. I look forward to joining in again next year...with a better drum. -- Amy Finley, September 2, 1997 at 10:42a
I had an amazing experience this year. As you can tell from the other posts, there were some problems - but in any crowd of 10,000, you'll get some assholes. Overall, these people were totally overshadowed by all the cool, friendly, talented, freaky, and genuinely nice and helpful folks I met. Even with the media, some were good and behaved themsleves, and some were bad and interupted other's experiences. The most valuable lesson - at the burn, there were cameramen standing up and blocking the views of others. I was sitting behind two cool girls, one holding a paper lintern and the other an illuminated flamingo. Instead of calling him an asshole or freaking out at him, one of them ran up and spanked him. Got the point across and he sat right down, but preserved the fun vibe and didn't resort to outright hostility. Best time I've had in years, including last year's camp, so to all the nay-sayers, chill out. Or, in the words of Adrian from Piss Clear, "Fucking adapt." I only hope they can overcome the evil forces of Nevada politics and be able to do it again next year - let me know what I can do to help. -- chris, September 2, 1997 at 10:38a

To everyone who experienced Burning in all its forms and engendered the City on the Playa, thank you. I am the artist that made the male and female tiki gods and was looking for some feed back from those who were there. I appreciate everyone who helped and all the attention. I was happy to have been apart of one of the most meaningful events around. For a second year Burning Man has changed my life as each of you have as well. The unbound insanity and childish mischief that oozes between us reaffirms my place among the those who Burn. Please email any thoughts or feelings or let me know if I personally touched you. Great...awesome...fun...definitely mind expanding. Images: the community spread out around the lake, fires burning, drums, music, glow lights and more lights, new friends, hot springs, that incredible sunset Saturday night, the amazing things people wore and drove. The energy. The creativeness. The participation. Wow. I burned a photo of an old relationship after The Man burned and then spent the night absorbing the energy of the drums, the music, the fires and the community into the next phase of my life. Thanks to all who made BM 97 an awesome, beautiful, educational and highly thought-provoking experience for me. My only rants are focused on the disorganization of elements such as the hot springs bus (got left out there with no shade for several hours), lack of trash bins (I would have helped clean up that nasty playa if there were somewhere to dump the trash, and the unreliable ice delivery and porta-potty cleanup. Luckily, those logistic elements did not detract from the awesome creative space that existed. Thank you, everyone. I'll be back. -- Amy/Sheyna, September 2, 1997 at 10:22a
Spiritual renewal, love, community, friends, a fucking blast. Any Los Angeles Burners want to take part in a theme camp in '98... we've got four people working on one already... we could always use more... Long live The Burn! -- Billy, September 2, 1997 at 10:21a
First time for the Burning Man and it was a great experience. I'm 45yrs old and going through a divorce so the original theme is appropriate but it was great being at an event where the star was a featureless but suggestive symbol instead of a media-created god or goddess. It was idol worship in the purest sense and so a celebration of self. Amazed at the crowd's friendliness and spirit. I hope it continues on. -- Mike Connoly, September 2, 1997 at 10:16a

Thank you, thank you for making this place have the real sense of community I was promised and then some. My favorite memories: that people actually read my love letters posted on the playa before they were burned; giving away free stuff (batteries, snack pack pudding, applesauce, and margaritas to the gorgeous Spurt girls); how many physically and mentally beautiful people were there, and how many of those were naked; Bingo with the space cowgirls; the subtle brillance of Fink Camp; the unsubtle brillance of so many others. It gladdens my heart to see so many creative, participating people! If you are planning an event for next year, may I suggest that it involve giving stuff away for free -- it's the best way to meet people and incredibly fun. Well worth any amount of money and more. -- DevilGirl, September 2, 1997 at 8:33a

Our first BM. I am trying to bring back the lesson of the community, the friendship, trust, the easiness, to my own life which is frequently anxious, tight, insecure and isolated. I am not sure if it is possible to hold onto it. When I arrived, I wished for a How-To-Burning Man handbook. Thank you to Jonathon (you painting fool), Tony, Andrea, Matt and especially the Vote for Hugh gang who all made my experience communal. Apocolyptic electronica isn't for me but it sure felt great when it stopped (right George?). I am still not sure How-To-Burning Man but I am interested in trying again. -- paula, September 2, 1997 at 6:55a
DRUMMERS: After we burned the Man, I was walking back to my camp when I heard a great beat. I tried to attend every drum circle I heard this weekend, but pounding big PVC sticks against a parked tanker truck with a bunch of other participants was the best drum circle experience I have ever had. MORE DRUM CIRCLES! Maybe next year I'll form a permanent drum circle theme camp with more outrageous instruments and 100% walk-in participation. Anyone interested, e-mail me, we'll start to make some plans. -- Deanne Taylor, September 2, 1997 at 6:18a

Thanks to all who came by and jumped on my trampoline. Also, I was a Danger Ranger for the burning of the man and I would like to thank everyone who cooperated with us and the firemen (very nice guys) I had fun and was a little worried abou the 20 Rangers and the 10,000 others. But everyone was so cooperative. I was worried that the fire marshal was gonna pull the plug but because everyone worked together, he didn't and I got to burn my dollar bill on the man (money sucks). Also the person who gave me some h2o when she heard my voice dieing out, your an angel. I had such a wonderfull time thanks to you all. She moves in Mysterious Ways! My eyes have been opened! Henceforth I will strive for the ideals I felt beating in the heart of the Burning Man. Even amidst the everpresent watchful eye of Big Brother (Deputies, Helicopters, and Media) was the crystal truth: "An ye bring no harm, do what thou wilt." Never once did I see a need for sheriff intervention... not because they were present, but because we each controlled our own behavior as a part of a viable community. This was my first year and when I first arrived, I chained my bike to my van so it wouldn't be stolen. By Saturday, I knew I could lean it against the van an not give it a second thought. And in the coming year, BM will have the voice of another local Washoe County resident fighting for its right to survive!!! -- Kevin Enzminger, September 2, 1997 at 12:45a

I can't believe all the negative stuff I'm hearing about the media this year. I'm going to admit that I too was a freelance photographer with a camera. This is not my first burn and personally love the experience. I was painted & naked half the time doing my own thing taking photos to share my experience with others that could not make the event. The (offical) media was doing the same thing. If you did not want to be photographed or filmed, just say so. We all respected your wishes. We are there to share the experience with the unfortunate others that could not attend. every year burning man changes a part of my life for the better and I will continue to attend the event. Before some of you start throwing negative energy towards the media, talk to them. You will find they are ordinary people too like you and me just doing their own thing. Thats what Burning Man is all about, "doing your own thing". I talked to many "official" people, mostly at the hot springs, Media, Fireman, Paramedics and (believe this or not) Sheriffs too. They were having as much fun as the rest of us. This years event was fantastic. The helicopter was anoying though (like a fly you want to swat). -- Craig, September 2, 1997 at 12:30a
A brief word on law enforcement, and the experience that summed the whole presence up for me this year.. Some friends and I were relaxing in the shade Sunday afternoon, drinking our fluids and discussing plans for the night, watching these kites (not ours) fly over our heads. The familiar sound of the helicopter buzz pricked our ears, and we looked up to see the helicopter headed straight for the kites. We sorta giggled and said jokingly to each other,'Heh, bet that helicopter chops one of them kites down..wouldn't that be horribly funny?' Of course, it was funny, because we didn't think anybody could ever do something so horrific. It's sorta like going around popping kids' balloons at a birthday party, right? You just don't DO that. Well, as we looked on in horror, lo and behold, the helicopter cut one o' dem sumbitches right out of the sky. I'd like to think it was purely accidental, but the kite wasn't too far above the chopper and surely the pilot must have seen the thing, if he had been at all watching where he was going. I had a wonderful time this past week..just got home to nice humid Baltimore. Although I wholeheartedly intend to come back again and again until there are either no more burning men or no more me, I'll never forget this year. It was dang near perfect as anybody could have expected it to be. Thanks to everybody. And hi to everybody I met along the way, you're all great lovely people. *kiss kiss* -- Kathleen from Baltimore -- Kaffy Bruce Zambini, KSC, September 2, 1997 at 12:04a
No so-called "problem" with this year's BM got in the way of the absolute purity of experience and expression that I felt every single hour I spent there. The vibe does not care about scrub-grass or porta-potties-- vibes are about vibes, and I must say that I will continue to ride high on what was indeed a near perfect vibe. A situation in which "everyone is perfect" is not a community-- that is more like an assembly of selected people. But get all those various people (including the 'bad' ones) around a fire with pounding hearts and boundless energy, and that feels like a pretty successful experiment to me. Burning Man encouraged and enabled me to use that magic lens to view both the world and other people. That's alot more than I can say about just about anything else. Will return and return and help keep it alive... -- John, September 1, 1997 at 11:54p
Enjoyed my second burn as much as the first. Media was annoying but not as bad as the groups of people scattering bottles and other crap to the wind. If they actively participated by setting up their own camps, (personal effort, not corporate) they would have just as much right to be there as anyone else. I was surprised by all of the negativity on this page. Anyway, Best memory: Post-burn Rave getting assaulted by the mobile flamethrower (Mermen?). The apocalyptic electronica in the background made the whole scene totally surreal. I am planning to return in 98. -- The Architect, September 1, 1997 at 11:50p
i experienced freedom. thank you. -- jeff mcavoy, September 1, 1997 at 11:43p
I didn't mind the media that much. Random tourists with camcorders and cameras bugged me much more. I think a "you must be nude to operate a camera" rule would go a long way towards solving this problem. Ditto for for the skin puppets standing in front of the camera. An incredible, mind bending time. This year was my first, but I look forward to being a more active participant next year. John p.s. Now that I'm back to civilization, with access to my bank account, where can I send a check to support BM? And do I get a tote bage at the $50 level and above? :-) -- John Brewer, September 1, 1997 at 11:41p
Change is inevitable, and as with many things, the numbers of spectators (Ticketholders?) will grow faster than the numbers of participants, but that's not so bad...what does rankle is the intrusive presence of the media, the Government forces, and the political greed.. It was a shame to lose the circle owing to the location change. The circle made us closer...the copters with video cams made me angry. What a bunch of twits. -- Ken, September 1, 1997 at 11:35p

Alright. I didn't go this year because I couldn't skip the Black Rock feel. But I do want to see what it looked like so I can talk about how much better it used to be to all the newbies who will be pestering me for the coming week. So, where the hell are the photos? Where are the stories? Come on, kick it down. stan -- Stan Leisure, September 1, 1997 at 11:27p
What was it with the porta-potties this year? Arriving on Wednesday, I witnessed the ever-climbing and ever-souring of those movable bathrooms until Friday night. Vague stories of strong-arming sheriffs robbing the event holders of the dough needed to pay the folks that manipulate the cleaning machines. Oh, and was it only MY map that indicated far more of those bathrooms would be available than what was there? Or were those little X's indicating that this was some sort of "treasure map"? Roy. P.S. The helicopters did give it a war-zone feeling. Maybe next time they could play "Flight of the Valkeries" too? -- Roy, September 1, 1997 at 11:19p

? Joseph Chilton Pierce re: collective consciousness? answer: True. How does this apply to our respective agreement of creative conscious will in our desert and the inimical force of the collective faith of the hellfire Christians who use their faith to separate us from Creation Spirit. Hellfire has been in there a while true to form, it knows no bounds, time to burn it down. The void is our home/the creator our infinitly hospitable host/the ineffable in which we hold our experience true from the damage of collective judgment, which uses language structures to damn w/o ineffable knowledge. How can anyone judge w/o living all experience and thought and w/o knowledge of cause and condition? Answer: this can only be done in ignorance and without love and full consciousness. Newbie me says: Be careful who you damn. You may be trying to destroy your own artist nature in the process. Forgiveness and love are divine wisdom from dead. Creators within us, our free will can't be given away w/o spiritual arrest and death. That's why artists are closest to to the creator and most free, because they retain their creative will and awareness and give birth to progeny of their imagination. Black Rock is a clearing in the forest fecund with the fruits of our collective conscious experience wild and free with the fruit of each of our imaginations. We are all alone and individual according to our own free will. We will be so so long as we respect the creator within ourselves as well as all others. Let's make sure that we welcome ourselves in the infinite ineffable mother/void by retaining nonjudgmental selfawareness and love extending to all perceptors regardless of how they may percieve us. -- Benjamin H., September 1, 1997 at 10:50p
Initially I was put off by the site... it was pretty much as described by the B.M. staff, but it sure wasn't the Playa. The camping conditions were cramped, the "playa" was bumpy, the frat boys were annoying, and the media was intrusive. I could find a lot "wrong" about B.M. '97. But I did have a good time. It's not the same as the past B.M.s but then no one said it would be... things change. This is what I figure: if you're interested in this "thing" we call Burning Man wait a few years until the hype blows over and the yahoos stop going. Be patient, help out, or stop going. -- Don, September 1, 1997 at 10:48p
Burn the Cameras! Burn the Trojan Duck! Burn the Hecklers! I had another great time, but the experience is tarnished. Communities happen in circles, I missed that. I felt far from my neighbors on the "south side of the tracks." Give and take. Love it, Hate it.... -- Dirt Girl, September 1, 1997 at 10:44p
Being a newbie and also given the wrong idea of what Burningman was about, I was disappointed until the last day. I had waited since Thursday morning for the man to burn. What this meant to me was the end of the weekend, just as it had meant to Mr. Harvey as the end of his relationship. If I do go next year I am going to appreciate more of the art and less of the marking time for the man to burn. I can only hope that the facilities are kept a LOT more cleaner! -- Michelle, September 1, 1997 at 10:38p
Hi everyone. Couldn't make it this year.... We are going to press on our NY issue and need a short pithy description of this year's event. 100 words max.... This is not a piece.... I just want to quote a participant. A quick email back is all I need. Thanks! -- Jim Monk, September 1, 1997 at 10:33p

Ahhhhhh... (just a deep sigh of contentment, nothing more) -- John Glenn, September 1, 1997 at 10:32p
Wow, what a great time, what great people. This morning I watched the sun come up on the playa while dancing to best electronica I have ever heard. Stayed up all night Sat. and Sun. and yet I feel refreshed, my spirit has been renewed. Thanks to everyone for sharing. Cal -- Cal, September 1, 1997 at 10:24p
The Media leeches have invaded, digested, commodified, and mainstreamed Burning Man! Next year I suggest no more Good Morning America, no more MSNBC, no more film crews running around with cameras and bbom mikes, no more FUCKING CORPORATE MEDIA!!! Ban them. Permanently. Send invites & info for next year's event (if there is one and it hasn't been bought out by the ghost of HellCo) only to those that have attended at least 2 or 3 Burning Man events in the past. Burning Man desperately needs to return to its roots. -- paul, September 1, 1997 at 10:21p
Four years running. It's been nice. No, it's been fucking great! Thanks to *everyone* who has ever helped in any way in putting this together. However, things have changed - as all things do. Jet Ranger helicopters straffing the crowds with noise and light under the pretense of security at $1000+/hr - I didn't come to be babysat. Winnebagos accreting in safe, private circles like musk ox on the tundra, suburban white boys sportin' dreads and imbibing $50 bottles of scotch bang faux drums and laugh at those "faggot fucks" two tents down. Yeah, these guys are cool. These guys are hip. Newly greased and oiled media clones slinking about looking for the perfect face to utter the perfect sound-bite so that the great Couch Zone of America can vicariously suckle on the energy of our frenzied hearts. Sanitizing and packaging an idea that will, ultimately, become more about money and numbers than spirit and communion. "The Center Cannot Hold..." and all that stuff. Still, hearts seeking isostacy have a way of finding that bouyancy amidst the riot of the horde. And that alone is enough. To be re-Minded. To re-Member. Certainly that's enough to give thanks for. Other playas and archetypal figures await building and burning. -- Ray, September 1, 1997 at 10:03p
topic: newbie electronic word and sound artist spiritual looking for home in the field found a place of sancturary and attonemnt in the burning of the man. When the master walks in the wilderness a path proceeds behind, but what if the master discovers a path in the wilderness bent toward the discovery of her headlong? -- Benjamin H., September 1, 1997 at 9:54p
Thank you to the Burning Man community for giving me childhood rememberance! Best playground I've been to yet! To RENA: Feeding you animal crackers on your bike while cruising on the floating living room out on the playa really did it for me...let's continue the feast! -- Kevin Gerzevitz, September 1, 1997 at 9:52p
I met her in the House of Doors. She was from New York. I was from L.A. Together we painted our mark on one of the hundreds of doors. A lobster reaching for a star from out of the sea. In fifteen minutes I built more electricity with this stranger in the desert than a year of formal encounters in the city. Let's meet me later at the Artic Oasis. We kissed. She walked off into a sea of tents. That was the last I saw of her... -- Eric, September 1, 1997 at 9:50p
To Timmy...the electric couch is the creation of Jim Kirkpatrick of Alameda, CA. He is not on the net...but you can reach him at 510-521-9425. Thank You Burning Man people whoever you are ! The last time I was in such a polite environment was at Woodstock, but the art blew even that away ! My favorite was the "flying bicycle". I'm 44 and my wife from Sweden who is 42 did not want to go. I tried to sooth her during the drive to Black Rock by telling her our motto could be, "We're not like those people..." But that was 36 six hours ago. Thanks ! Great, wonderful time in spite of some tension from the staff. Hey guys - we know the county was putting ya to the screws, but that's no reason to bite the heads off the volunteers. -- Terry, September 1, 1997 at 9:34p
I just walked in the door from my first burning man. I can resoundingly call it the most interesting experience I have ever had. I loved every minute. Any experience that can expand you in so many ways is well worth it. The sense of community and unity was very strong for me and moved me in a powerful way. And, hey... whose idea was it to use the water truck stuck out by Pepe's camp as a ginat drum? Brilliant!!! -- Doug Fuller, September 1, 1997 at 9:27p
I heard the event lost about $100,000 even with the high admission price. I hope they can figure out how to recoup so there can be another. That ranger at the exit gate was colllecting last minute money but I was all out. Sorry guys. -- dutch, September 1, 1997 at 8:48p
I carved her name on the Man's leg and when I watched him burn I finally knew I could get over the pain. -- Chris, September 1, 1997 at 8:42p
where the hell do I get one of those remote couches? Are there plans, someone help! We want to do tandem remote recliners. thanks in advance. P.S. Who was that guy on the cross? I have now converted to catholithism. who is the man with the roving end table with the phone on it. E mail us at trimmer999@aol.com enjoyed that table! Could you please inform us who is in charge of the food concesions whe are interested in the following year. I think I have something that will go over really well. If you are interested please E-mail me for further conversation on this issue. THANKS LET'S PARTY LABOR DAY '98. -- timmy, September 1, 1997 at 8:39p
Had a great time!!! There was lots of talk about the changes that have occured to the festival and as with most things, change is perceived as a bad thing. Change itself is neither good or bad, it's just different. I thought the crowd was well behaved and when you have that many people loaded and naked, stuff happens.... hope to be there next year -- Jeff Schults, September 1, 1997 at 8:23p
I love you all -- John Marston, September 1, 1997 at 8:10p
Another incredible experience! I know it's expensive, but let's all pitch in (financially) as needed to give B.M. a future!! -- Bob, September 1, 1997 at 8:10p
It was amazing; an almost total lack of pretention made this one of the best experiences of my life. -- Dave, September 1, 1997 at 8:04p
incredible - except for all the police helicopters... -- Anon., September 1, 1997 at 6:35p
