Three Day Stubble

Three Day Stubble in the early 90s were a SF-based weird, psychedelic circus, contortionist band that is still around today. The odd qualities were a natural match for the Cacophony Society. John Law approached them to play Burning Man in 1993, and they, along with the punk band Mudwimmin were the first live bands to officially play Burning Man. They returned again in 1996 (see video below). The founding member, and lead singer was Don the Nut, an odd contortionist, who once appeared on the gong show (captured below).

John Law tells the story:

I convinced Three Day Stubble and Mudwimminn, with the help of sound man Hernan Cortez, to bring their instruments and amps out to the desert. My idea was that having the proto-nerd band Three Day Stubble and the great all-woman punk band Mudwimmin play beneath a Giant Dog Head sporting a neon halo, would be a fabulously surreal thing to see, where most might envision "tribal" drumming or quasi-mystical, pseudo Arabic yodeling of some kind…

Well, I was right about the weirdness of the juxtaposition of such thoroughly city oriented acts out in the vast empty reaches of the Black Rock. It set the tone and drew a line for others to cross when it came to later truly weird performances and installation at the rapidly growing desert shindig.

On the Gong Show

This program was taped in late 1988 and aired in early 1989 and re-broadcast around 4th of July 1989. This edit is a tribute to the life of Roddy Piper who passed away on July 31, 2015 and to the career of San Francisco radio broadcaster, Don Bleu, whose last radio broadcast was on June 26, 2015.
