An interesting article appears in the December issue of the New Art Examiner. Entitled 'All the Rage', it does a reasonable job of reportage' though the writer seems to hold both reader and language hostage with the multiple use of terms such as 'schisms', 'deconstruct', 'decontextualize', and other arty poo-pooisms. SEEKING TRIBAL MUSICIANS/PRACTICE SPACE IN SF: Greetings fellow music makers. I'd like to connect with other tribal musicians in the Bay Area to organize a music camp and performance at the next Burning Man. If you have or know of an ample, highly acoustic, resonant space where we could gather, rehearse, and share ideas, I'd really appreciate getting the information. Warehouse spaces are possibilities, if they have a fairly warm interior (playing the recorder in cold spaces doesn't work). Any cathedral-like space would probably work. Even a large living room with hardwood floors and high ceilings, shielded from traffic noise, would likely work. I'm a skilled recorder player, playing a wide variety of styles, some of which you've probably never heard played on the recorder before: Andean huaynos, Indian ragas, Baroque, Renaissance, and ancient music, shakahachi-type Japanese melodies, Celtic, Middle Eastern, and American folk tunes, and many of my own compositions, often tribal in nature (think Dead Can Dance). You may have heard me playing at some of the drum circles at the last Burning Man. I play with drummers, other flautists (Native American, Indian, Andean, and Celtic styles), guitarists (acoustic and electric), keyboardists, and singers, and would love to work with anyone who's fairly skilled and wants to create a dynamic music camp and performance experience at BM. If you have either musical equipment or money you can donate, DALAI LAMA DING DONG needs you. WHO/WHAT WE ARE: We're a San Francisco-based Faerie band, meaning we've got tribal, sexy, spiritual-yet-cynical, unabashed queer attitudes. We produce an acid-jungle brand of music, with searing vocals, mesmerizing synthesizers, hypnotic drums, exotic flutes, and trippy electric and acoustic guitar playing. At our rehearsals, you'd likely hear anything from trancy Indian raga-style sets to Verve-like wall-of-sound, hard-rockin' numbers, to acid-jazz improv sessions. Our band size fluctuates depending on who's in town (Faeries tend to be Gypsies) and happens to be staying at the big Faerie house where we most often rehearse. But our core group remains five members -- Sri, Tree, Downey, Julian, and Karma -- ranging widely in age, some of us multi-intstrumentalists, others vocalists (we're still seeking a full-time bass player; if anyone's interested in jamming with us on a trial basis, let me know). WHAT WE NEED: Being Radical Faeries, naturally we're artists living on the edge, chronically underemployed because we don't fit easily into the mainstream. ISO Puppet Theater video from BMan '97. I'm looking for videotape anyone might have (any format -- VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Fisher-Price) of the Laughing Scorpion Puppet Theater and Puppet Wall, our installation at Burning Man this year. This was the 4'x8' white and red puppet theater and 5'x100' black wall located southeast of the Man. Just another media mention (though an unlikely one). On an episode of "Jeopardy" last week, during the lame conversation section, Alex quizzed the dread-locked guy about his summer vacation- Chris responded he was in the desert north of Reno at Burning Man, and proceeded to describe it as a temporary city where elaborate structures are raised, then burnt to the ground. Did anyone else from Virginia attend Burning Man 1997? We were the guys with gold camel that skirted water. We were British Archeologists. Seeing that Man Burn was the most exciting thing I've seen in a long time. I enjoyed hanging out and dancing with the drummers and percussionists. They kept the Beat going for hours after the Man Burned. TO the guys from the Fandango Camp with the flame throwing Vegematic, that was the most awsome thing I saw at Burning Man. It is too bad they didn't let you torch the non-stop TechnoDance/Trance Machine. But I guess someone would have seriously burned. You got beat by the Big Ice Ball Though !!! THE ICE WON!!!! Next year you need to install a car motor show you can drive that around to the various camps. What a pagan pyro festival!!!! I will never be the same again!!! PART 16 The reason I’m telling you this is to bring to light an otherwise obvious point (this isn’t the first time that something like this has happened by the way, but I reeeealy like my Burning Man Sticker, so I keep it visibly posted on my window), for whatever reason, there will always be those that fear, are threatened by, or are otherwise upset that people like us exist in this world. They choose not to understand that we "feel the Earthbeat", that we have a need to be free and a need to express ourselves in our own way, to be a part of something much much more than what commercial society has prescribed and administered to our parents, ourselves and our children. They will always try to stifle our creativity, our enthusiasm regarding spirit and love, and our general opposition to the current norm of "buy this and be happy". -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:09p
PART 15 (So I don't recall Roman, so what) This is an interesting note of interest. On the way back I pulled into a gas station and there was this guy there. He didn’t know that it was my Jeep that he saw a Burning Man sticker in the window on and so he comes into where the cash register is as I am paying for my gas. He says, "That yer’ Jeep out there?" I replied, "Why yes, yes it is indeed my Jeep out there". He says "So, you one o’ dem weirdo’ freaky satanist fuckers from da’ deeeeeesert"? I replied "No, just a regular freak". He says "Alright Mr. Smartass, you got a beef wit’ me, you want sum'!!"? I replied "What is your preoccupation with my ass being smart or not, by the way"? (That was when he got reeeealy angry). Well, needless to say, he didn’t take to kindly to my questioning of his obvious masculinity and tried to hit me. It was kind of fun for a second and then I remembered that I was having dinner with a friend at the Lake that night so I exited stage right. PART XIIII Also, here’s a reminder to any and all skilled workers out there. If you visit the site, give something back, ask the land owners what you can do to lend a hand, maybe take a rake with you and trek out to find some left ashes that need raking or packing out. As always, send good vibes out to the Playa, the whole land and the whole planet and beyond, and most of all, to yourself and those you love. PART XIII On the other hand, Joy the Astrogirl has a great slant on this. Burning Man should be new every year. Burning Man is nomadic, Burning Man site structures should all disappear after each event so that each year has it’s own vibe, it’s own space. I think Astrogirl is right on. So I could go either way regarding the Bone Arch. The consensus this past weekend was that it should be left. I’m alright with that. Ultimately, I think, Mother Nature and Mother Earth will tell us what the best course of action should be. I’ll check on it every time I’m at the site and I’ll do what my heart tells me to do, re-tie a bone here and there, or if the whole thing just gets blown/washed/eaten away over time, I’ll do what I can to clean it up. PART XII As for the Bone Arch., here’s my very personal take on this beautiful work of art. The giant wind storm last week has cordially molded the bone arch into a "flacid" state (check out the picture, you’ll get it). The interesting thing is however, that if you didn’t know what it looked like before the flacidness, then I think you’d still look at it and say "Yowza, that’s pretty nifty". Even if you were able to know it "pre-flacidia", I think you’d still think it’s !!dynomite!! (Jimmy Rogers impression). So, if it was left there, it’d still be this beautiful thing,. PART XI Everyone wants to know about the Bone Arch and about Pepes Tower. Well, here’s the scoop. Pepes tower, as many of you know, was not entirely burned during Ishtar. It’s remnants still remain far out on the site. It seems to have assimilated itself "into" the Playa surface and resembles an "outgrowing" , birthing, reaching for the sun, semi-organic, "thing" that in a certain perspective seems to have "emerged" from the Playa. Will it remain? There is word that it’s structure will be salvaged and/or hauled out. We’ll see how it goes. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:57p
PART X So what’s left to do on the Playa? Well, throughout the year, some of us have committed to making regular "non-intrusive" treks out to the site and taking out hefty bags and rakes and doing what we can to be very certain that it is returned as closely as possible to zero impact. Some great souls are still out there at this very moment, Some of us will return every couple of weeks. The roads through camp are beginning to regrow their brush and much of the wildlife is returning as well. The Aspen groves in the hills above the site are just beginning to turn golden, It’s an incredible thing to see. PART VIIII My thought on this moment is this. Maybe I was extra joyous at the moment because I had just outright "absorbed it" and was now in a continual state of bliss, or maybe it just decided that it was done with me and it found its way back to the Playa surface. Well, if I absorbed it, then I think that’s pretty neat, I’ll always carry it in my heart nonetheless. If, however, it decided to return to the Playa, then I think that this is good also. It will fall into someone elses lap some Twilight morning and then they too will be in a state of super bliss. PART VIII Well, it was a great few days on the Playa. We accomplished so very much. On an earlier trip out, A little hologram smily face necklace found me and I had been wearing it ever since. It has brought me so much joy. Somewhere between the pedal camp teardown and lunch, I reached inside my shirt to show it to TeePee Dan, and I discovered that it was gone. For a brief moment, I was sad. But then I remembered how it came into my life in the first place. I was sitting at "the tree" one early morning at Twilight, and the wind blew through the branches and it just fell into my lap. I thought "grooovay!!!" It was icing on the cake of a wonderful sunrise at the Playa. Like I said, I had been wearing it ever since that morning (a few weeks). TeePee Dan and I were stacking metal panels from pedal camp and he was telling/relaying to me some of his memories from when he attended the original Woodstock. I was extra happy at the moment and wanted to show him the hologram happy face necklace around my neck. PART IV A short but powerful storm came to the Playa Friday afternoon and made for very soggy and chilly working conditions Friday night and through most of the day Saturday. Everyone carried a few pounds of mud on their shoes, in addition to carrying countless pieces of lumber, metal, and unmentionables throughout the day. The spirit never diminished, everyone was alive. As tired and caloused and wet and wind blown and muddy and thirsty and hungry and muscle cramped as everyone was (at one time or another), the spirit never diminished!! The small group of people out there this past weekend represented everything that’s "good" in all of us. They are an incredible bunch. For every bottle cap they picked up, a mountain was moved. For every pile of debris they cleared, the land expanded. Sad to hear about the amount of litter and heavy refuse left out on the playa. None of us deserve another "Burn" if these societal ills can't be corrected. If you can't party and be responsible for your actions, then stay home. Go to a mall where you belong. I don't want to camp with you shits again. Our "Kill Your Television" burn was nice and clean. We had every cinder swept into one hefty bag by noon the next day. It only took us an hour, so we filled another bag with bottles and cans in the perimeter of our sight and the main stage. So simple! We were so happy to take it with us. It made us feel good. And, it was way less to haul than what we came with. Front page of the Reno Gazette-Journal today: "Burning Man legacy litters desert" The Burning Man Festival made a mess at the edge of the Black Rock Desert, and if the garbage isn't removed quickly, the controversial Woodstock-style event won't be welcome next year. The angry ranch manager who allowed the Labor Day party on her land wants the litter cleared this weekend, and Washoe County is threatening criminal action if the refuse isn't picked up by Oct. 24. "Where are the little piggies that left the [trash]?" asked Fly Ranch operator Anne Westerbeke, who is also suing Burning Man organizers for failure to pay for use of the property. "They should come back." The art-and-entertainment event, which attracted about 10,000 people - many of the naked - took place Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 and culminated with the burning of a 40-foot wooden statue of a man. Westerbeke fears that the trash won't be removed before fall rains turn the desert to mud, preventing trucks and other vehicles from being driven around the festival site. "It's kind of a race against nature with the storms coming in," said Westerbeke, who has picked up festival garbage on her own. "It's really a tragedy, the garbage situation out there." Organizers say a clean-up effort is planned Saturday and Sunday. If the trash isn't hauled away, Westerbeke won't allow another Burning Man event on the ranch 17 miles northwest of Gerlach. "The answer is 'no'" Westerbeke said. "If they can't even clean up after themselves and get their site fee paid, the answer is 'no'. What's fair is fair." The festival's San Francisco Bay area-based organizers say the trash includes remains of sculpters and other art work burned during the festival. They also say Westerbeke will get paid. "We should finish [cleaning up] this weekend," Burning Man comptroller Will Roger said. "All the actual garbage is cleaned up. There are just some structures left." The Washoe District Health Department, which is hold Westerbeke responsible for trash pickup as the property manager, sent warning letters late last month to the Fly Ranch and Burning Man. Westerbeke could be fined up to $1,000 if the garbage isn't removed. "We have several options," health department environmentalist supervisor Jeanne Rucker said. "One is to see if they have made any progress. If they have, we can work with them until they get it cleaned up. The other is to issue a criminal citation." Trash is just one of Burning Man's problems. Another difficulty is money. Burning Man owes Westerbeke about $20,000 under and agreement to pay her $2 per person attending the event. That's part of about $100,000 festival organizers said they owe creditors when the event ended. Washoe County kept $246,865.17 in Burning Man gate receipts to pay for fire protection, law enforcement, sanitation, and other services at the event. The county, which impounded festival ticket sales to make sure its costs were covered, returned $55,898 to Burning Man. That's not enough to pay all creditors, and Roger said Burning Man will conduct fund-raisers to make up the difference. Washoe County Commissioner Jim Shaw said this year's difficulties would be considered if Burning Man tries to stage a 1998 festival in the northern Nevada desert. "I don't know if the county wants to do this again or not," Shaw said. "I would demand they have some up-front money. When you come in with your request for a permit, make sure you have a couple hundred thousand dollars to go along with it." Burning Man organizers had blamed their money problems on the county, which imposed more than 100 health and safety requirements on the festival when it granted construction and business permits for the event. Festival officials said the cash crunch hampered clean-up efforts. Burning Man, which has taken place in northern Nevada for seven years, moved from Pershing County to Washoe County after 1996. The festival had failed to pay a $23,000 site fee to the federal government on time. Washoe County Commissioner Jim Galloway wouldn't rule out Burning Man obtaining another festival permit. "That's provided we still have reason to believe our conditions can and will be met and we will be able to collect our full costs for service," Galloway said. A clear lesson of our experiment is that we humans create and leave a lot of "packaging" in our wake. Lets bring some light to our dark nature of wastefulness. Garbage Camp will be thematic and of course heavily ritualistic. A theater of dumpsters (recycling included) overseen by monks/MCs robed in thrown away items. What price shall people pay to cleanse themselves of their refuse burden? The more they have the greater the price! (humility is the cleanser of the soul). ::ATTENTION ALL:: Do you have experience in roofing, plumbing, electrical wiring, or general carpentry??? Then your help and knowledge sure could be put to use at the event site anytime, especially during the volunteer cleanup effort the weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th. (Oct) There is much work to be done at Annie & Vans ranch (they are the wonderful people who allowed us to set up Black Rock City on the Playa). Repairs, helping with construction on the ranch, hauling out left items, carpentry of all sorts are needed. Arrange supplies with Annie and Van "before" you head out. Donate some of your skills to these wonderful people; pound a few nails, help install a door, insulate something, hang some siding, ask "how can I help"? Someone who could have a creative idea or two regarding "communications" for the ranch would be great (any mobile communication speacialists out there?). Hope to see you out there. P.S. have an extra 1/4 or 1/2 chord of good firewood that you don't need? They could use it for the Winter (theirs was 'borrowed' during the event). ::last post continued:: from the site. Some structures will, and should, be left alone. The bone arch still stands and is a beautiful piece of art. Please leave it alone (my personal opinion). So there is deconstruction to be done, as well as alot of hauling to the conveniently located dumpsters on the site. That means that "flatbeds" and "trucks" are mucho bueno items that will greatly help the cleanup effort. Also, it rained heavy the last couple of days, so keep that in mind if you plan on treking "out" on the Playa. Also, it is a little colder during the night time now, so if you camp, bring warm stuff to beat the chill. The weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th, your help is needed. Whatever you can contribute, time, encouragement, even a positive vibe from wherever you are, it would mean so much. Please help to "fully" restore the event site to its' amazing and wonderous beauty. And when you get out there, if you happen to run into Annie or Van, just say to them "thank you" for being such generous hosts, thank you for everything. ((and, if you can, bring them some good firewood for the Winter too, since theirs was 'borrowed' during the event, I'm sure they would appreciate it very much)). :: Site Cleanup Update :: Speacial thanks to everyone who participated in the volunteer cleanup effort last weekend (26th, 27th & 28th). You got so much done. Bob, Sharon, JoeMe, Stephanie and Aaron from the City and Santa Cruz, Garth from Reno, Don, Sunny & Littlefeet from Nevada City (hope to run into you this weekend at Ananda), Kim & Walt from Heaven, thank you so very much for everything you did. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!!! Also, thanks to "Flash" for caretaking of the Playa, he may never see this post but thanks, nonetheless. All of you, for every bit of picking up this or that, helping out at Annie and Vans' ranch, and just generally giving so generously of your time and sweat. It is so very appreciated. So where do we stand now in terms of the site cleanup? Well, opinions differ, but my take on it is this : A great deal has been accomplished in the month since the event, but there "still" remains much to be done. Can it be done? You bet! As a matter of fact there is a plan to get "everyone" out there the weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th. What is left to do? Most of the labour of love "on the event site" revolves around PEDAL CAMP (pun intended). Nearly all of pedal camp was left (trash included). So there is messy cleanup work (hauling to the dumpsters) as well as deconstruction work, involving more hauling of unsalvageable wood to the dumpster and the stacking of any "salvageable" wood in a pile so that those who can use it may haul it away -- Shona, October 2, 1997 at 2:09p

I came to Burning Man from south Florida with the feeling that my life may be transformed there. My expectations were met beyond my wildest dreams. This was truly the happiest time of my life. I walked around Saturday night with all my new friends thinking to myself that this was truly the most sane, alive, and connected to people I'd ever felt. Speaking of... all my love to Rodney, Chanel, and Eric in Reno and Chris and Deb in San Fran. I feel like I've known you all for years. And to Larry Harvey, thank you so much for having the vision and courage to make this event possible. You must be incredibly proud. Althouugh I was prevented from attending, your site has enabled me to understand what has transpired to some degree. We live in a time where people are forever being divided and your concept of community is essential if we are to retain our collective humanity. I feel very much connected to this experience as I am working with others to create a full time community with similar conditions to the ones which you are defining, and I am watching your experiments with an eye to recreate them. I believe that space is one of the crucial elements in defining social interaction, and our embryonic entity seeks to utilize some of the underappreciated areas of our nation. I would love to see events like yours blossom on a regional basis, I think the communication tools and the will are already present. All that needs to be added is the connectivity between individuals necessary to coordinate it. You, know, it seems *so* silly for some of us to use the word "artist" to describe/compartmentalize ourselves - especially out there on the playa. It's a word that seems to work very well everywhere else (outside of Burning time) but, everytime I hear the word I find myself scoffing/chuckeling (is that two 'l's?). The intensity of this thing was indescribable, I have one question: was the guy on top of the '73 satellite death car one of the former members of the group "Information Society"? he was tripping me out...especially when he said "If you're whit you need to take off all your clothes...You are the oppressor!!".....at that point I looked around and did a (cultural inventory) and later thought to myself: WHAT IF THE NAACP FINDS OUT ABOUT THIS..THIS WHOLE FUCKER COULD BE CONSTRUED AS SOME SORT OF RITUAL KKK ZIPPO FEST....and that could present a danger to the equality of attendance for next year...I personally like looking at nude multicultural men, so I WOULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS HERE....besides, we were pretty close to Idaho. Our response to the media was the "KILL YOUR TELEVISION" performance. Thanks to the many patient folks who stuck around to enjoy our bit of intellectually compelling slapstick. Now, we reveal our hypocritical side. Did anyone happen to get us on video? Or, would some of the film crews that were present like to send us some footage so we can watch it on our television?! I'm unwired for a few weeks, so you'll have to phone me at (503) 524-7602. As for those who have such a bug up the ass about cameras of any sort at Burning Man. Find a creative way to enlighten these people, without such a harsh attitude. "Play to" the camera in the spirit of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. Give 'em what they want, and then some, until they just feel absolutely silly trying to capture it all. Let's also remember that there are people doing some very artful imagery with the photos that come away from Black Rock City. My only bitch this year is with the littering pigs that left their ciggy butts, bottle caps, bottles, and cans all over this beautiful and fragile environment. Drink in your camp and then go play. Don't bring these societal ills with you to the playa. If you can't pocket your butts, must we really have to make it a non-smoking venue? Take responsibility, or suffer the consequences. Fuck you thrice and never return if you can't take responsibility for your actions. And shame on you dog owners who let your dogs suffer, and for the dog shit we stepped in. Same goes to the human excrement we stepped in about 200 feet out on the playa from the mainstage. No pooches next year! We leave ours at home, so can you. It's just that i've something important to say... This so-called "event" is, of course, in actuality a MOVEMENT that could *still* save this planet (at least the humans). I know we must resist ALL labels, but bear with me. The plaintive question of whether there will be a Burning Man '98 is less important than the urgency underlying it. If Burning Man only needs money to survive WE can raise that! It seems this year inspired MANY despite all the naysayers and cynics. All we need is to focus *a little* and we can create a fund-raising event that would not only be FUN in it's own RITE, but also a realistic way to attract MONEY! Yes, those of us with precious little financial reserve will have to donote our talents and time to the project--but isn't that one of the things that makes Burning Man so great? We of Black Rock know the sheer joy of sharing and contibuting. Not because we are "great humanitarians", no, we just know IT'S FUN. The rewards are far greater than the efforts. Oh shit. My second time and better then ever. I don't know about you, but I came back to "so how was it". Mostly from the people who swore in 96 that thay would be there 97, but wound up going surfing, or to Vegas or ???? I could only look at them and after a few moments of non articulation say, "there are no words strong enough to describe what the hell happened on the little playa the last few days". I would try to summarize it with "Mardigras on Mars, or Living in a Dali Painting, I don't know" and leave it at that. We had a theme camp this year called Scetch City which allowed us more interaction with the participants (and spectators). I'm 33 years old. I've been a lot of places and done a lot of things. This tops it, by a none comairable margin. This constant divouring stimulation is what I've been trying to get out of life since I was ass-high-to-a-dog. I've achieved that twice. B-Man 96 and 97. And hopefully every other one there after. Soon, when I travel the world as a film maker I can come close to this feeling during the B-Man off season, but for now I'll just live with the images that are stuck in my head and a big-ass smile on my face. All who came, won! Yea there was media, camp followers, "young boys" and the local authorities; they probably did not get it. For me it was refreshing, restive and a break "to reality" from the daily grind. The wonderment of BURNINGMAN and the people who gathered in his name was only surpassed by just being there on the playa. I drove north on 34 from the site, instead of following the pack going south and more was revieled to me as I rode the high desert. It's too bad that many were so put off by the consumer/spectators. Yeah, they exist everywhere but Burningman is a community 'not of this world' where we have the opportunity to show em all a thing or two... and most of us did. I managed to find the most wonderful, friendly, creative, mindblowing people to hang with, share with, listen to, converse with, and enjoy... This was my 2nd year and I found this one to be just as good as last year's. The media hype scared me bd off by it. This year, thanks to Dan & Bridget, about 20 of us sat at a playa-front camp (in the Blue Light District) and watched the burn from afar... much more enjoyable. I was somewhat skeptical before embarking on my first journey to B.M. A few years ago I went to Woodstock (part 2, of course) and was disenchanted by the corporate and self-serving structure of the ordeal. But my reservations about B.M. soon vanished. It was the closest I've ever experienced to a utopia. I can't count how many people offered me a drink of water, or food, or a lollipop. I've heard it described as an anarchistic party. This could be further from the truth. It is true that for a few days structure or boundaries of our routine life did not bind us. But all of us created a city, free of judgement, ego, and pretension. I stripped down completely naked and danced with fury. Not a moment was I self-conscious. For some that may not seem like a big deal being that it was common place this weekend. I was never able to let go. It wasn't just the open space that made my experience so profound. I needed more then just a weekend in the desert to unravel myself. Until I started to let go of all the masks of work and relationships did I grasp how tightly I was wrapped. Not only was it a land for self-expression, but a vehicle for self-expression. Great Burning Man. The popularity of the event is indeed strange, however, the sense of community this year was remarkable considering the events scope. The emphasis of procreation rather than pointless destruction this year really balanced things out. I didn't have much problem with the media nor with the "spectators". This was my second time, and I found it an incredible community. Burning Man is now the Freak/Underground trade show of the year. We did a lot of networking and met people we should have met a decade ago but never had the chance. I was very busy and involved with projects such as performing in my new musical project with Scot Jenerik, and putting together our live/work space the "Black Light District". We did not have ourselves on the map since we wanted to be underground even to the event. We were able to do whatever we wanted basically. I find BM now an experiment in community. We arrived the Saturday before the event, when there were about 100 people. We saw the community rise from the mud. Sat-Mon you got to know everyone. You didn't have to lock and it was really fun helping out with the initial setup. Tue. many camps were getting set up, but things were still confusing and chaotic. Wen was the first official day and there were several thousand people in camp, but still many open gaps. Thur got bigger, and by Friday we had a city. By Friday you could not visit the entire community and we started locking our stuff. There were a lot more Spectators. Saturday last year was a very scary/violent/negative day. Although Kal's Helco performance was unsurpassed, and dwarfed the Sunday burn, the crowd was nuts on Saturday '96. We just hid in our trailor basically while the Gates of Hell burned. In contrast this years Saturday was a great feasival. Sure there were a lot of camps I could care less about, like all the obnoxious little rave camps, but there were also real gems: the Woodpussy performance was completely briliant!!! Sunday was again a completely joyous event. I will also point out that there were not really THAT many rules. For example, we borrowed a flatbed truck and found a generator and PA, then announced a show via megaphone all over camp. We performed in Center Camp right after the burn. This was a completely underground show. The pirate radio station did invite us, but we did not have to ask permission or sign any papers...we just did it. We did it by joining in actively in a ad-hoc community. TCH'KUNG and our project combined for the performance. It was really nice. So in my experience BM was an amazing unsurpassed event. I was able to be creative in basically any way I liked so long as I wasn't harming anyone else. This is sorta what we used to mean by "Anarchy" back in the late 70s and early 80s. We formed an "anarchist collective" of sorts in our Black Light District. We performed random acts of kindess and such on people through the DaDaClub. We through together shows that helped define our community organically without any formal structure. I interacted very little with the official Media, and they did not interfere with me. The "normal" people also pretty much ignored us, but the people we wanted to reach were easy to find. We exuded a "hardcore" yet "Positive" influence this year, as did many other camps. It was awsome and it must continue. Also, I've never had much of a problem with "normal" people since I usually design my projects with an eye towards education, so even the stupid "show us your tits" frat boy types get an idea implanted in the back of their mind. My first Burning Man and it was wonderful. Met great new people and got to know the five people in my group a lot better. Attitude is indeed everything on the playa. I would like to apologize to all the bitter people who were at last year's Burning Man and apparently resented my presence this year. I caught some pretty serious flack! Why? Do you realize that of the 10,000 people from last year, you all only had to invite one person this year in order to double the number? Next year can I complain too? Did anyone find my camera? A cheap Kodak 35mm jobbie from a drugstore with a brand new roll of film in it. One last comment - would everyone please consider not using strobe lights in their 'art'? I have epilepsy and all the strobes made it very difficult to participate at night. Strobes don't really add any statement to your expressions, they're just cheap devices to hide poor execution. was surprised and fascinated by the phenomena of 20,000 plus people interacting with a minumum of rules.More people doesn't spoil the pudding, just makes it different. Was disappointed by the suburban zoning. Camp energy was unnaturally contained and shaped by the radial zoning. Street names? Town center? come on, decentered cities are much more interesting. Last year's 'seek your own distance and level' use of the playa was profoundly different. Burning man himself needs to be on the scale of the event as a whole, no? First time for me-definitely not the last, I hope. Like others, I thought it was too late to go to B.M. I was wrong. It was better than I had expected. Large groups of people often make me anxious: at B.M., I could not get enough human contact. Inspiring. Much fun though. To those with negative things to say, I have a couple of comments. Ignore the media if they bother you. They should not have the power to ruin the spirit of the thing. And personally, I rather liked the helicopter- it was exciting in a way. More importantly, it feels good to flaunt to the media and to the authorities that people can come together to create something that in many ways totally defies the norms that our commercial culture uses to beat us into the ground. I am sypathetic to B.M. vets, but I believe that true community-building cannot exclude.(Paul!) Anyone who is cool with the rules and the spirit of the thing should be encouraged. I was really happy about the real lack of pretension there. I think the fundraiser is a great idea, and hopefully there will be more discussion of this topic. Once again, my heart takes me to a place where I NEED to be, and once again, I come too late. I look at these posts, and the experiences I had this weekend, and I can see what Burning Man is supposed to be, and I can feel it through all of my mind, body, and soul. Somehow, though, through all of the good vibes of the community that I needed to be a part of, it all felt tainted. The taint of the ever present media, and authorities just BROKE MY HEART. Ya know... I kept hearing people say that they were "Here to protect us from ourselves"... No.. they weren't. They were there to protect THE ASSHOLES WHO DIDN'T GET IT from themselves. The frat-boy mentality of some of the inhabitants really irked me. ALl they did was sit around all weekend drinking beer, and not contributing to the community at all. If they want to be consumers, they should STAY THE FUCK HOME! It just drives me insane, and I was in tears most of the trip home. It wasn't leaving Black Rock City that saddened me. IT was seeing all the people who didn't "get it" leaving bags of trash on the roadside, and hotrodding pickup trucks across the playa so they could get out of there, and escape their communal responsibilities, leaving their tracks where they went, instead of covering them. I can't believe it. I've been to the Burning Man 4 years now and it has been ruined. Why? Why was this wonderful event of free spirit and peace demolished? This years camp site was horrible. The fact that we were being babysat by endless numbers of police including an ever circleing helicopter was ridiculous. I'm sad to see what this annual cleansing session has turned into. Four years running. It's been nice. No, it's been fucking great! Thanks to *everyone* who has ever helped in any way in putting this together. However, things have changed - as all things do. Jet Ranger helicopters straffing the crowds with noise and light under the pretense of security at $1000+/hr - I didn't come to be babysat. Winnebagos accreting in safe, private circles like musk ox on the tundra, suburban white boys sportin' dreads and imbibing $50 bottles of scotch bang faux drums and laugh at those "faggot fucks" two tents down. Yeah, these guys are cool. Newly greased and oiled media clones slinking about looking for the perfect face to utter the perfect sound-bite so that the great Couch Zone of America can vicariously suckle on the energy of our frenzied hearts. Sanitizing and packaging an idea that will, ultimately, become more about money and numbers than spirit and communion. "The Center Cannot Hold..." and all that stuff. Still, hearts seeking isostacy have a way of finding that bouyancy amidst the riot of the horde. And that alone is enough. To be re-Minded. The Monday Morning Da Da Club will be in attendance at this years Burning Man. Bring a favorite found object for our Found Object exhibit. We'll also be performing Random Readings so bring a favorite book to add to the sound, or a small battery operated tape recorder with a speaker, for our procession of sound. Fellow moths and mothlettes, just a quick note to pass on a bit of info to consider. I was up at the site this past weekend and things are going well. For those planning to attend understand that the new site is a lot smaller than what you may be familiar with although it's still large enough to allow for many more participants. If this past weekend is any indication of what to expect then there are several things you may want to plan for starting with: 1) count on bringing some sort of a ground cloth if you plan on setting up camp on the playa itself. There are portions of the site which are still a bit damp. Depending on where you'd like to be encamped relative to the Man's location. 2) consider bringing one of those portable shower bags along. As I understand it the communal showers may not be there this year. 3) don't *EVEN* think about driving out on the playa for any reason whatsoever. Though the mud is firm enough walk on in most places cars and trucks - even 4x4s - *WILL* get stuck. 4) consider rethinking your shelter to withstand 40+ mph winds. Though the weather was beautiful, the wind was 'a kickin... 5) pray for the foolish neophytes who arrive with little or no water. Things were damn hot on Saturday and if the weather stays hot like it was this past Saturday you may witness a few absolutely stellar examples of Darwinian selectivity taking place. 6) *If* you bring a dog you need to know that there are cattle roaming about with whom we'll be sharing the site with. They are not going to be at all happy with one or more dogs chasing after them. Also, DO NOT even *think* about going after the few prime areas which have trees. The beasts hang out there to keep cool as well as to feed. Don't be rude and squat on their turf just because they might be wandering around somewhere else. Just a few points to mention here. LAMPLIGHTER MEETING IS AUG 14 THURS. 8PM I am looking for people who would enjoy participating in lighting the lamps which line the pomenade and stretch all the way to the Burning man. The Lamplighters need you! We need individuals of hearty character and sincere disposition to retrieve, clean and relight our many lanterns. Then !!! We get to ceremoniously carry these beacons to their places atop majestic spires, arrayed in the robes of our illustrious order. We'll be located in the center of town, where our ritual, symbolizing the Mythical rebirth and reunion of Maad and his sister Dana, will be re-enacted. Also, if you can sew and know how to use a sewing machine, call me because I need some help making our ceremonial robes. I'm not much of a sewer, but I've got a very good machine.
